Bay Beach is a fictitious community, loosely based on several real life beach communities along the Chesapeake Bay.

Thurmont, Maryland, is located just a few minutes from the Maryland/Pennsylvania border. The nearby Catoctin Mountain region is where Peejay's father, Logan Novak, was kidnapped.

As an adult, Peejay visits the area again. These are (real) photos taken of Catoctin Mountain Park and a nearby covered bridge, which were both described in the story:
