#19 Teachers are a Community of Learners:
I have to share an experience and thought. I shared it in another class, so if this is a repeat, please forgive me. I took a computer staff development course about two years ago where the instructor taught us how to use things like Microsoft office, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc. (all that archaic stuff J) to aid in our teaching and in the children’s technology development. The instructor made a comment that most software is designed with business in mind because that is where the real money is. From a marketing standpoint, designing teacher software is not going to be as lucrative. So, the instructor said, this class was designed to give us multiple ways we could use this “business” software to aid in our instruction and in keeping records on students. It struck me as sad to have to tweak the existing software, but, with a sigh, I accepted that is how the world works. I must say,….. after being in this program and seeing all the MANY wonderful websites designed just for instruction and good learning, I feel so proud of the teaching community. We rose above this obvious bias and created, and continue to create, great learning tools via technology on our own; and they are FREE! J The teaching community is a special group of people. Teachers are the most creative, adaptive, committed, selfless, and focused group of people. We always seem to find a way to meet our children’s needs regardless of what the world gives us. Good for us!!
