Sample Online Lesson....

Class!   I just received this letter in the my teacher mailbox !!!!

Boy, he sure does have a problem.   Are we qualified to help him?   What do you know about grass?

  1. 1.    Cut and Paste this KWL chart into Word and fill in What you know, What you want to learn, and then save the "What we learned" section for after we complete this unit.  The point of this chart is to get us thinking about what we already understand about this problem and what we think we might need or want to know in order to solve Dr. Fincher's problem.

  2. KWL Chart on "Grass Grief!"

  1. 3.     Next, we are going to brainstorm about this problem and come up with a plan on how we are going to meet Dr. Fincher's requests and his DEADLINE! -yikes.  Post brainstormed discussions on our discussion board at Session 13 Unit Plans (4-20) and label "brainstorm."  Write on what you think we will need to know to help solve this problem.   Finally give ideas for a plan in solving this problem.  We will summarize your ideas into one class plan.

Developed from the framework of Day 1 Lesson

Day 1 – Introduce Grass Grief Problem and Guide Them in Defining What They Need to Know –KWL chart

Objective:  The students will understand the unit problem enough to formulate a plan of what they want to learn and what they need to know to work towards solving this problem.

Introduction: Read Dr. Fincher’s note to their class and let them react.

Dear Mrs. Frazier’s Class,

I have been concerned about the areas on campus where the grass is not growing.  I am asking your class to find out why it is not growing, what are possible solutions to fix this problem, and the costs and benefits of each possible solution.  I would like a submitted analysis and proposal on my desk via email in two weeks.  I have chosen you because you are very bright children and are good at problem solving.

A sincere thank you for your help,

Dr. Fincher

Provide a few minutes of discussion time and let them accept the responsibility of solving this problem.

Main Activity:  Begin with each child filling in a KWL chart.  The students fill in the first two columns.  This activates prior knowledge and stimulates them into researching in the right direction. Save for later reference and filling in the last column after the completion of this unit.  Brainstorm on the board with the class what our KWL charts revealed

Extended learning: Have the children work in small groups to brainstorm conclusions on what they need to know to solve this problem.  Share as a group on the board.

Closure Conclusion:  Pick one or two children to give you a summary of what they discovered today about what they knew and also about what they needed to know in order to solve this problem.  Restate slowly, as a teacher, what the class has discovered today and where it seems they are headed tomorrow.
