Gen 3:7-24

(7)  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

(Note 1: Their eyes were opened to sin, shame has now set in, and they covered up the nakedness that they were once not ashamed of! Knowledge of sin should bring shame, and place in man’s heart the desire to act against that sin.)

Why did they cover their nakedness? Who was around that could see them? It was only they and the animals. They covered their nakedness because their newfound knowledge of sin revealed to them the shame of being naked. Look at the world today. They run around naked. Is it because they have no knowledge of sin? Is it possibly the fault of the Church? Where we once had a great influence in our government and policies, we are now led away captive to the gross misunderstanding of the term “Religious Freedom”? Is it because once we had what the world was seeking, but now we are now seeking what the world has? Have we allowed Satan and his crowd to silence the voice of the Church? Without the voice of the Church, the world cannot hear the Laws of God. Satan has certainly beguiled the Church! In so doing he has also beguiled the world. Hence we look around and see the nakedness of the world, and it is without shame!

(8)  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Even after they sewed fig leaves together, they tried to hide from God! Why, they covered their sin, didn’t they? There are two lessons that will be learned here:

A.     A partial covering of the flesh is still shameful, and not appropriate attire to be in the presence of a Holy God! Yet when we look at the modern day Church, what people wear to Church may be unsuitable, but what they don’t wear is far worse! Now for the bomb shell… If you believe that God is omnipresent (which He is, see “i” below), that is, every place at all times, then you are in the presence of God whether you be in the Church, at the house, in the restaurant, on the streets, at the beach or anywhere! How are you presenting your body? (See “ii” below)

                                                              i.      Psa 139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

                                                            ii.      Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

B.     Your meager attempts at covering your sin can never please God. They sewed their fig leaves together; they had their sin covered up from each other, but that failed when they were to come before God. There are many things people do today to try to cover their sins before each other, but before God their covering will be just as unacceptable. Religion cannot cover your sins. You cannot be good enough or do enough good things to cover your sins. You cannot give enough money to cover your sins. Being Faithful to Church cannot cover your sins. Baptism cannot cover your sins. These are all good works, but there is only one way to cover your sins!

                                                               i.      Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

                                                             ii.      Mat 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

                                                            iii.      Act 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

                                                           iv.      Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

(Note 1: Remission: Def: Forgiveness; pardon; that is, the giving up of the punishment due to a crime; as the remission of sins.)

The shedding of blood is the only way to remit sins! We will see that later in this same chapter.

(9)  And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

The question being asked here is not an inquisitive “Where art thou?” it is more so calling of God for Adam to present himself to God. Adam walked with God, and now he was trying to hide from Him. God was revealing to Adam that his attempt to cover his sin was futile. Adam’s sin now stood between him and God. Again, no matter how hard he tried to cover his sin when he came before God it could not cover his sin. He was guilty!

(10)                      And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Here Adam confesses that his attempt to cover his sin had failed; he was naked, even with his covering on! Many will face the same failure on the day that they stand before the Lord.

            Mat 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

(11)                       And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

God did not inquire as to Adam’s sin, rather God required Adam to be accountable for his sin. We will all give an account one day.

            Rom 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

(12)                       And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

(13)                       And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Man’s inert nature is revealed here, find someone else to blame for your failures! This is even evident in the world today! Look at all of the talk shows, everyone is blaming everyone else for their problems. Nobody will take responsibility for their own actions! Pass the buck: Adam blames Eve, and she blames the serpent!

(14)                      And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

(15)                       And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

The Lord did not even give the serpent a chance to respond, he judged him! The serpent was guilty of tempting man to sin.

(16)                       Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

The woman’s judgment was sorrow in childbirth and child bearing. These were not originally intended to be painful. Also, since she was so easily beguiled, God declared her husband to rule over her. Therefore the man is the head of the home.

1Ti 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

(17)                       And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

(18)                       Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

(19)                       In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

The man’s judgment was that he was to work to support his family. Work was not intended to be easy, and man was not intended to be a lazy bum. It was never the woman’s place to work to support the family, it was ordered by God that the man do so.

(20)                      And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

(21)                       Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

(Note 1:Def: Skins: skin (as naked); by implication hide, leather: - hide, leather, skin.)

Here we conclude that the shedding of blood was necessary to cover their sins! Coats of skins came from animals. Animals had to die! Blood was shed to remit Adam and Eve’s sin! Just as Christ’s Blood was shed to remit ours! Hallelujah!

(22)                      And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever:

(23)                      Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

(24)                      So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Just as God said, they will surely die. They will not be able to eat of the tree of life! Adam and Eve began the dying process that day.
