Leonard
Worden was born in 1776 at Town of Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY; (his father had come to Dutchess County by 1760). He was the son of
Benjamin Worden and
Sarah Frost. Leonard Worden married
Sarah? Montross?, daughter of
Robert? Montross, circa 1793; According to notes written March 2, 1960 by Gladys Evina Borden Chapman, Leonard was married to an Indian squaw. But see also the letter written in the mid-1940s by Flo Mann. She states that it was Leonard's father who married an Indian. Still another letter (from Muriel Meeker who descends from Philena, daughter of Samuel Montross Worden) tells the following story: "There was an elderly man who lived next door in a house that Katherine [Mann Kipp] own[ed], who was a relative. She never let me meet him. She asked him who the father of Samuel Montross Worden was. He told her, Leonard Worden and when his wife, Sara Montros died, he had an American Indian squaw come live with him. We come from the Indian." A letter from Bev Murray states that Sarah Montross' mother was an Indian. (Copies of all three letters are in DJW files.).
1 Leonard Worden died in 1841 at Dutchess Co., NY; He died in the Dutchess County Alms House between May and August in 1841.
2 Leonard Worden appeared on the census of 1790; On the 1790 Census, Leonard is age 13 and with Benjamin in Dutchess Co. He also appears as head of household in the Town of Clinton on the 1800, 1820 and 1830 Censuses. Another Leonard Worden (probably a son of Jesse and Ruth Dart) appears in Lorraine, Jefferson County, NY on the censuses of 1830 and 1840.
3 He appeared on the census of 1820; Leonard is shown with 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 26-45, 1 female 10-16, 1 16-26, 1 26-45; Commerce.
4 Leonard's lineage as stated here is tentative. The only "proof" I have is Census records and two letters written by descendants who knew his son, Samuel Montross Worden. In 2002.
