     Barend Southard was born on 16 October 1772 at Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., NY.2,3 He was the son of Benjamin Southard and Maria Ostrom. Barend Southard married Elizabeth Ostrander, daughter of Elias Ostrander and Rachel Van Etten, on 20 August 1797 at St. Paul's Zion Luth. Church, Red Hook, Dutchess Co., NY; The Southward (Southard) bible record in the D.A.R. collection provides information on the birth and marriage of Barnet Southward and Elizabeth Ostrander. It also lists their eight children. Page 197 of the D.A.R. volume contains the following notation in addition to the information noted above:
"Original in the possession of the Society.
"This single leaf was presented to the Society recently by Ernest A. Maynard, 161-41 86th Avenue, Jackson Heights 72, New York, with a notation that the Bible from which it was taken was published in 1810, and that the family concerned lived in Ghent, Columbia County, New York. --Ed."
The Southard Gazette pedigree chart shows the marriage date as 23 Nov 1797 in NY.
Their son, John, is an ancestor of Richard G. Rider who authored an article, "A Case of Mistaken Identity: Two Joseph Southards" in the NYG&B Record Vol. 116, No. 4.4,5,6 Barend Southard died between 1820 and 1830 at Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., NY.6
     Barend Southard lived at Ghent, Columbia Co., NY. He appeared on the census of 1810 at Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., NY; with 2 M under 10, 1 M 26-45, 3 F under 10, 1 F 10-16, 1 F 26-45. He began military service in 1812 served in the War of 1812.7

     Benjamin Southard was born on 5 June 1738 at Hempstead, Nassau Co., NY.1 He was the son of Joseph Southard and Catherine Barnes. Benjamin Southard married Maria Ostrom, daughter of Hendrick Ostrom and Maria Davids, circa 1759.1 Benjamin Southard died before 16 April 1805 at Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY.1,2 His estate was probated on 16 April 1805 at Index of Wills, Hudson, Columbia Co., NY; died intestate. Peter Becker of Hillsdale and John Van Etten of Rhinebeck, sons in law, were awarded his estate.3
     Benjamin Southard lived after 23 June 1744 at Rhinebeck and Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY. He served in the Revolutionary War; His patriotic service was as follows: He served in Swartwout's Dutchess County Regiment in Fowler's Company. He enlisted 4 Aug 1776 at 40. This is referenced in the NYG&B Record. The article states he was a weaver, born on Long Island, 5 ft 6 1/2 inches tall with a brown complexion, hair and eyes. His name was spelled Soatpard in Roberts' NY in the Revolution. In addition, Benjamin was a Signer of the Association Test.1,4,5,6 He appeared on the census of 1810 at Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY; with 2 M under 10, 1 M 26-45, 1 F under 10, 1 F 16-26.

There is a reference at the First Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Valley, record "#12: 17 May 1812. Baptized adult, Elizabeth Worden, wife of Samuel Worden." But also see Samuel M. However, the Southard Gazette records show it having taken place between 1690 and 1695.3,2 John Southard died between 1730 and 1740 at Hempstead, Nassau Co., NY.
