Luis

| There are members and non-members who are receiving emails from members that contain viruses. In order to try to stop this despicable person or persons we strongly recommend that all members take the following steps to assure that all members' computers are free from viruses and spyware. | ||
| We have no connection to any of the companies listed in this document. We gain nothing by suggesting their use. The intent is to make your computer more trouble-free and efficient. | ||
| Please don't wait to be attacked. Take action now. If you don't then you'll regret it after you are attacked. | ||
| ( PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT ALL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS LISTED HEREARE COMPLETELY FREE AND PERFORM MUCH BETTER THAN THE COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE PRODUCTS. ) | ||
| Windows Updates: | ||
| First and foremost, regardless of which version of Windows you are running, you should click on Start/Programs or All Programs then click on the "Windows Update" link. InstallALL Security Updates and Recommended Updates from the "Windows Update" site regardless of which version of Windows is installed on your computer. The Security Updates are of particular importance. The Recommended Updates are of lesser importance but, nonetheless, should be installed for further protection and to keep your computer up to date with the latest versions of Microsoft software. | ||
| Firewalls: | ||
| ( Note to all WinXP - SP2 users: WinXP - SP2has a built-in firewall. Please assure that it is activated. ) | ||
| All others please visit the below site to download and install the FREE program, ZoneAlarm. A firewall does exactly what it says it does. It places a "firewall" between your computer and external sites except when you say it is OK to connect to the site. It also STOPS any attempt by an external source from entering your computer without your authorization. This program will automatically check for new updates every time you are connected to the internet. It will also STOP any program's attempt to access the internetthat has been installed on your computer without your knowledge. | ||
| http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/ | ||
| Click the link named "Download FREE ZoneAlarm®" or if you so choose, click the link named "Versión en español" to start the download and "Save" it to your computer. After it is downloaded you can exit the internet and find the file in your "My Documents" folder and double-click it to start the install. After the install is complete you'll have to restart your computer. It will start automatically every time you start your computer. | ||
| Anti-Virus Programs: | ||
| If you have current anti-virus software installed that is not expired then please update the signatures and do a complete system scan using your anti-virus software. | ||
| If you have current anti-spyware software installed that is not expired then please update the signatures and do a complete system scan using your anti-spyware software. | ||
| ( As a matter of fact, we havecompared the anti-virus software listed here against both Norton Anti-Virus and EZ-Trust Anti-Virus software. TheFREE Grisoft AVG is better at identifying viruses and removing them from your computer. We'll go even further. If you have other anti-virus software installed then we would suggest that after you have installed Grisoft Anti-Virus then you should use it and uninstall any other anti-virus software that you have installed. Rely strictly on Grisoft Anti-Virus software. We have no connection to Grisoft. They are located in Czechoslovakia so we gain nothing by suggesting this. ) | ||
| If you do not have anti-virus software please go to the following link to download then install Grisoft AVG 7.0. After installation update the virus signatures by using the included "Update Manager." After updating to the latest signatures please run a complete system scan to assure that your computer is virus free. Please be advised that this program is completely free. It will also update the signatures automatically every time it senses that you are online. After you have clicked on the below link then please scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the link named "avg70free_308a468.exe" then click on the "Save" button to save the install file to your computer. | ||
| http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 | ||
| After you have downloaded the file you can then exit your browser. You'll then have to "Browse" to the location where you saved the file and in most cases it will be located in the "My Documents" folder on your desktop. Double-click the file to start the installation. | ||
| After the installation is complete the program will start automatically each time your computer starts. Double-click the square, multi-colored icon in the system tray near the clock. Click the "Update Manager" button then click the "Update" button on the bottom of that window. ( You'll have to be connected to the internet for the update to work. ) After the virus signatures have been updated you should then do a full system scan to assure that your computer is free from all known viruses. | ||
| Spyware: | ||
| ( IMPORTANT NOTE: For those of you who insist upon using Incredimail, Smiley Centraland other programs that contain spyware then please be advised that installing and running any anti-spyware software will render those programs and sites useless and unavailable to you! ) | ||
| Spyware programs do exactly what the name implies. They spy on your computer activities without letting you know that they are doing it. The programs install without your knowledge while you are surfing the internet and in most cases when you click on any "I agree" or "OK" button on any website you visit. In other words, you are agreeing to let the site install spyware on your computer. The programs report back to sites on the internet. | ||
| Please download and install the following software at the following link: | ||
| ( For WinXP users you can
download and install Micrsoft's Anti-Spyware program at the following
site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671& displaylang=en&Hash=SF8F566) |
||
| Download by clicking the download button and install this program. | ||
| Optional Spyware Programs: | ||
| Spyware Blaster can be downloaded at the following site: | ||
| http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.htmland click one of the "Major Geeks" links that is closest to your area. It will have to be downloaded, installed, updated and run to assure that you are protected from the latest spyware programs and sites. Spyware Blaster will passively protect your computer from known spyware sites. | ||
| One program that
we have found
particularly useful and efficient is "SpyBot - Search and Destroy."
Click the download link under the name "Spybot Search and Destroy v1.3." |
||
| http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/ | ||
| SpyBot - Search and Destroy actively monitors sites that try to put spyware on your system and will not do so until you authorize it and will deny it if you do not authorize it. | ||
| Email: | ||
| When sending email to just a few members it is OK to send as CC, ( Carbon Copy. ) However, when sending mass emails to all members or to many members it is strongly advised that you "Send To" only one person and use the BCC, ( Blind Carbon Copy ) function of your email program so that no one will get a long list of email addresses which can be compromised in this fashion. It would probably be a very good idea to get into the habit of using the BCC function for absolutely every email you send, even the emails that are not sent to many people. That is what we have tried to do in most cases. | ||
| Technical Support: | ||
| For those users who are on dial-up connections where download times for this software would be prohibitive then arrangements can be made to have this software burned on to CD and mailed to you. Ask Luis for details about a nominal fee for the cost of blank CDs and mailing costs. | ||
| We are always available via email for any technical computer questions that may arise. | ||
|
Email addresses: |
||
| Please be advised that any technical questions sent to the two lower addresses will merely be forwarded to Gary. | ||
| We are also available for any telephone technical support. Our long distance charges are flat-rate per month so that it can be pre-arranged that we can call you at a designated time. Also, please be advised that in cases of telephone tech support Inesita will be the translator, if necessary. :-) | ||
