True Artificial Intelligence -- that is, the production of actual thinking machines -- remains in the realm of science fiction. Nonetheless, AI as a branch of computer science at least partially succeeds in automating tasks that seemingly require intelligent behavior.
Computers are stupid, but very fast. With a little creative programming, they can speed up the process of trial and error and produce desirable results. This makes them seem to be smart. Programming AI consists in large part of breaking simple tasks down into ridiculously simple steps. It's an eye-opener.
