Browse Amazon Books: *NIX Applications Software (Linux, UNIX©, BSD, Solaris, etc.)

Amazon.com's webmasters put a reasonably representative selection of *NIX applications on the Linux page under the heading: "Browse Open Source," but didn't build an "Open Source" directory. Instead they made links to general book searches using the keywords "computers" + the name of the app. These worked pretty well once, but since A9 search migrated from "powered by Google" to "powered by Windows Live" they've become pretty useless. You should have better luck with the links below.

If you are installing ports and packages to *NIX systems, you probably realize that these apps are appropriate for *NIX generically, not just Linux, but in case you are approaching things in a different order, just looking for information, buying for somebody else, or whatever I'll just state it explicitly: These applications are for any "flavor" *NIX.

One of the greatest things about *NIX is the huge selection of Open Source (Free) applications. You need to download or otherwise acquire the appropriate version for your OS, but these will usually be included with your distribution, or at the very least there will be some documentation regarding the appropriate version numbers.
