Agents act on behalf of another, software agents therefore are programs that do something on behalf of a user. Web browsers are known as "user agents" because they retirieve information from the web for a user. There are also a variety of internet bots that perform more complex tasks, notably web crawlers that recursively retrieve web pages for use e.g by search engines.
This section has improved since I started complaining about it, but still contains a lot of general "droidology" books. It now includes Spidering Hacks, which is great & very popular.
