Yvonne Barbara Alwon was ill with arthritis; She suffered with acute arthritis.
She was a very cheerful person in spite of her severe arthritis. She became ill in her early twenties. She underwent many operations including the replacements of her hips. She was one of the first to have her hips replaced. She kept herself busy with family and friends. There were always visitors to her home. During the holidays, she sold Christmas cards. I enjoyed being her partner with our seasonal enterprise. She also wrote a weekly gossip column for the Bay Ridge Home Reporter. Her life was hard because of her sickness and her relationship with her dad. He did not appreciate her need to socialize. He was a private man who didn't trust anybody, especially strangers. Her mother, Matilda (we called her Taita Alwon), took care of Yvonne with a love that few can give. Taita worked day and night to make Yvonne feel happy. When Taita Alwon died, Yvonne's life worsened. She was alone with her father in upstate NY. Her aunt Jean and her father tried to put Yvonne away in a nursing home. Yvonne fought back. This depressed her a great deal. According to her brother George, this pressure from her father and aunt may have caused Yvonne to kill herself. The hospital lists the causes of her death as: 1. Generalized peritonitis, 2. Acute diverticulitis colon, 3. Bilateral congenital polycystic kidneys, and 4. Chronic rheumatoid arthritis. Her Social Security Number was 067-09-5270. He is also known as "Oula (Nicholas) Nami (Norman)". We call him Jido Nick. His great grandfather was an "Alwon", meaning an addressor. An "Addressor" wrote addresses on letters for others. As a little boy in Beirut, Nick wanted to work. At four years, he started fires for an oud (violin) factory in his neighborhood. He also helped his dad roll cigarettes. Nick's dad used to bathe in the Mediterranean Sea after work. As a child, Nick used to bring his father towels to dry himself. Afterwards, Nick remembers good feelings because his dad put Nick on his back and carried him home. He was four or five years old when he followed his brother and sister, Toufic and Victoria, to America. He came with his parents and sister Jean. Nick continually got sea sick on the boat. He recalls Jean looking after him. He lived at 148 Norfolk Street in Worcester until he married. He received his American citizenship on 4/12/15 in Worcester, MA. The document describes him as 5'9", white, dark complexion and brown eyes. His country of origin is Turkey. He worked for the Brooklyn Navy Yard from July 7, 1924 until his retirement on Dec 1, 1956. His employment was sporadic with many periods of layoffs. It seems he also worked for F.W. Bliss & Co [Processed metal machinery and automatic can machines] for twelve years as a mechanic until 2/21/1934. Nick lived with his niece Jeannette from 1965 until his death in 1990. He did not treat her well. He expected her to behave like a woman from the old country. He wanted her to be only with him and to care for him. Friends were not welcome...only family. Jeannette took Nick to the hospital four times...for kidney stones, pnemonia, and twice for colon cancer. He was at Memorial Hospital on Belmont St. and at the Fairlawn Clinic, both in Worchester. He was brought up to be a Roman Catholic priest in Beirut. He wasn't happy with that life and left the church to get married. He took Jamily as his wife when she was twelve years old. He was in the tobacco trade, drying and rolling cigarettes and cigars for wealthy people in their homes as well as in a special room in his own home. After work, he would walk fifteen minutes to swim in the ocean. Nick, his son, would bring him towels to the beach. Nick walked to town to get ice for his father's drink, ouzzi. His other children would prepare the drink for him. Norman came to this country around 1905. His Uncle George Assatly paid his passage. Norman didn't like to work. He loved gambling and drinking. His favorite was American beer. Whiskey and Arak were also his preference. He gambled on sports as well as cards (baccarat). He found a coffee house on Wall Street in Worcester where he could drink and gamble. He earned a reputation as a man who chased after women. He always had some cash but would try to get more from his Uncle George Assatly and Eli Solomon (his sister Victoria's husband). His son Toufic would give his mother Jamily spending money. This always upset Norman. During one incident Norman was harassing Jamily. Toufic grabbed his father and punched him so hard he fell to the floor. On a separate occasion, Victoria slapped her father because he was beating her mother. When drinking, Norman would always beat up and abuse his wife and children. When Nick was twelve, Norman almost beat him to death. Nick was well dressed and getting compliments about his dress and looks. This angered Norman so much that it took Nick over three weeks to recuperate from the beating. His sister Victoria took care of him and also raised money from her church friends for Novenas for Nick. These incidents occurred while the family lived on Orient Street in Worcester. As a result of the beatings and abuse, Jamily and the children so feared Norman that she never wanted to see him again. Jean and her husband, Armand Roubian (my Godfather), lived at 6918 Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn. Jean had a terrible reputation for being cheap! She studied and became a registered nurse and was the first professionally trained Alwon. Jean visited her sister Rose in Canada. One night, Jean took Rose out dancing. This caused serious problems for Rose and her family. A Mr. Tony Andrews [Jean's girlfriend's, Amelia Andrews, uncle] came from Winnepeg in 1959 and told Jeannette about the trouble Jean caused. Jean was a trouble-maker. It seemed like Jean tried to break up families. She would visit and say to the women of the house "I wouldn't live like this. Why don't you get out and see the world?" She did that with Matilda Alwon when Yvonne was young. She told her to leave Nick. At the same time, she wanted Nick to take another woman out and show that woman NYC. Nick did take her to a discount place. Matilda was hurt by this. Victoria, Nick's sister, got angry at Nick for this. Jean and Armand owned a photography studio while living in the apartment behind it. His brother helped him make the business succeed. After his death, she closed the studio. Little is known about her. She came to the United States in 1903 with her family at the age of eight. She apparently worked in a store owned by her father's friend, Boutras Sparda in Worchester until age 16 (or 14) when she was married against her will to Abram Haddad, a man some years older than she. Family lure has it that Rose was "sold" to Mr. Haddad by the family. They apparently lived in Norwich CT for a short period of time. Later they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they owned and operated a confectionary store. In 1919 Rose left Mr. Haddad because of conflicts between her and Mr. Haddad's daughter and family. Rose was continually abused by the Haddads. At one point, her sister Jean came to visit her and tried to take her away. She did not succeed. Since then, she lived a somewhat precarious existence, working at cleaning and sewing jobs. She also lived in various rooming houses alone or with a man. At some point, she entered or was put into an institution for the mentally insane. She was transferred from the Psychopathic Hospital in Winnipeg to the Brandon Mental Health Center on April 9, 1928. She remained at the Brandon Mental Health Center until her death on Nov 23, 1965. She died from Congestive Heart Failure. She and her brother Toufic came to the USA around 1898. George Assatly provided the funds for the journey. He made them pay the money back immediately. According to Jeannette, "This was a terrible thing. He could have waited." Within a year and a half, Victoria and Toufic earned enough money to pay the passages for their mother, Jamily and the rest of their family: Nicholas, Jean and Rose. Victoria lived in Norwich until 1908. The family then moved to Worcester. She attended the Grafton School as did the rest of the family. After grammar school, she worked for ten to twelve years stitching dresses. She married at 18. She met her husband Elias at a picnic. His sister in law introduced them. A couple of months latter, they got married. Her first two children, Joseph and Mary died before they reached three years old. She claims they died from the "Evil eye" of other people. To her, their death was the result of jealously. The children were beautiful. Other would comment that these children could not be hers because they were so attractive. Her ability to cook Syrian bread on an old black wooden stove was well known in the neighborhood. Kids would come to visit when she started baking. She helped her husband by making baby bonnets, sweaters and blankets. Eli sold them on his peddling route. She lived for a time at 98 Orient Street and then moved to Shale Street. Her death was caused by a fall from her hospital bed after a gall bladder operation. Her stitches opened and she died instantly. Victoria's occupation: Dressmaker at Worcester, MA. Elias then began to peddle door to door. He sold aprons, dish towels and other household items. Jeanette remembers him carrying two bags, one on his shoulder and one in his hand. He went to Mussup, Ct where his brother lived. Business was better for him there. On weekends he'd return to visit the family. Jeannette Hashem, his daughter remembers that Elias liked to sing. In 1954, several youths robbed him in a park. During the robbery, they hit him on the head. He was able to identify them. He died three weeks later from a stroke. Her father made her go to work at age 14. She wanted to go to high school, but he needed her to help because of the depression. Eli's business was not going well. At age 14, she went to work for the New England Manufacturing Co. in Shewsbury, MA. She stitched boy's pants, on sewing machines, for the next 39 years. She has good memories of those years. Her boss took them on a bus to the beach every summer. Every year they had celebrated Christmas with an company sponsored party. She says it was like one family. She had to go to continuation school until she was 16. She went daily for 1/2 day. She worked from 8 to 5 for 5 1/2 days for $6 per week. Roosevelt came with the NLRA and then they started getting $13 per week for 5 days. After 39 years, she was earning $60 per week for piece work. She also worked for Culver Corp. She made throws for couches. Again, she worked on sewing machines. Here, she was miserable for 9 years. She had no choice, she had to work to get her union retirement. She gets $90 per month from the union for her retirement. Jeannette and her husband George did get to travel. They traveled by car and visited California, Lake Tahoe, Shenandoah, the Carolinas, Georgia. They preferred unplanned trips. For many years, in February, they traveled all over Florida. From 1946 until George's death in 1971, they traveled. Their last trip was to South Carolina. Jeannette and her husband cared for their god-daughter when her parents passed away. Leona Scobi lived with them from when she was 2 until her 14th birthday. She married and lives in New Jersey. Jeannette cared for her uncle Nick Alwon for 25 "miserable years". She devoted her time to taking care of him. Nick moved in around 1965. Nick was overprotective of Jeannette and demanded all of her attention. Her friends stopped visiting her because of his sometimes unfriendly nature. Nick was good when his son George came to visit. Jeannette recalls once when George visited that Nick bought him 5 gallons of oil. She was hurt that Nick wouldn't do the same for her. To add insult to injury, Nick told George not to worry, because "She can afford to get it herself!". Jeannette took Nick to the hospital four times...for kidney stones, pneumonia, and twice for colon cancer. Ceclia was born at Worcester, MA, on 14 January 1917. They then moved to 15 Preston St for 9 years until 1955. They had to move because their home was being sold. George did not want the responsibility of owning a home. Jeannette had to talk him into buying one. During one of their visits to their friends, Louie and Helen Morell, they saw their future home being built at 46 Tarrytown Lane. He didn't want to buy a house unless it matched their furniture. Jeannette didn't care, she wanted a home. And 46 Tarrytown Lane looked like the right place. She was promised by her family from the day of her birth to marry Shakir. At fourteen she married and gave birth at the age of sixteen to her oldest son Badie. Shakir was sixteen. Nabiaha never forgave her mother, Katebh Toumani, for not allowing her to go to school. Nabiaha was very bright and rebellious. She was one of the first women in Homs to unveil herself in public. When she came to America, she didn't speak English. Yet, this did not stop her from traveling on her own. Even though she had her pierced earrings ripped off her ears, she would travel on subways alone. She managed to go from Brooklyn to New Jersey without directions. She'd ride on the "machines with the green eyes". We call them subways. Nabiaha was a creative cook and baker. Niazi claims she made great kibee. It was round and roasted on a gas fire. After Shakir died, she lived on 83rd Street with Nazir, Bahig and Alexandria. Then Emil, Ned and Philip came from Syria. She moved with them to Sunset Park Brooklyn. She then went to 79th and 7th Ave. to live with Ned and Nazir. Afterwards she lived with Philip and Emil on 83rd between 4th and 5th. Niazi stayed with them for four years until he got married. Philip and Emil then got married. They and their wives lived with Nabiaha until her death. She was fastidious with her cleaning. Folks say that she cleaned the bathroom in her hospital room the day she died. She died "full of cancer". Before she died she told her doctor, "Doctor, I'm ready." She died at 11:20 AM. Nabiaha's occupation: Homemaker at Brooklyn, NY. Nabiaha was born at Homs, Syria, in 1880. She was the daughter of Georgis Gorab and Katebh Toumani. She married Shakir Katen at Homs, Syria, in 1894.
