Ned went to Protestant schools in Homs, Syria. He studied for one year in a private boarding school in Mount Lebanon. He recalls that when he was about ten years old, the family had to move to the mountains for six months to avoid the yellow fever. It seems that some of the local Muslims made a pilgrimage to Mecca and brought the yellow fever back with them. As a young man, he recalls seeing several men who were hung for their political beliefs. He did not witness the hanging itself. Ned arrived in this country in 1920 with his brother Bahig, his aunt Labibi and her three daughters Mary, Nazira, and Nadema. He stayed with his uncle Oula Akras on Clinton St. [Brooklyn]. He then moved into furnished rooms near Atlantic Ave. He also lived a while with his brother Badie. Ned joined a YMCA when he came to this country. He enjoyed boxing and swimming. He also took night classes. He worked for K. Katen [Kamil and Aziz were the owners] for 40 years. He started as a stock boy, moved into shipping, and finally sales. He covered the mid-west from 1935 until his retirement. He'd leave for 5 week trips through PA, OH, IN, IL, KY, and Iowa. He would travel by car, train, and eventually by plane. He retired in 1984. He also manufactured linens with John Matouk & Co. He was a co-owner. Evelyn Zaloom and Ned married in 1933. She died in 1957 with cancer of the stomach. Nazir Katen was ill with eye disorders; Macular degeneration.

Nazir's occupation: Importer at Los Angeles, CA.
Nazir came to California in the early 40's with 3 children. He had been selling linens for his brother Badie in Brooklyn for about three years. Nazir's cousin Tameen needed help and asked him to come to California to sell for him. He didn't want to go. So he politely said he'd reconsider at Christmas. When early December 1943 came, a letter and a ticket to California arrived from Tameen. Nazir went to check out the West. By February 1944 his wife Mabel came with their three children. For 3 years, Nazir sold for Tameen. But, Nazir was having troubles with his cousin's sister, Tameene. He tried to no avail to resolve the problem. At the same time, Nazir was thinking about going into business for himself. He did. During his first year, the stress was very hard on him. He had heart problems. According to Nazir, he prayed and "asked God to take care of my wife and three children" should anything happen to him. He now says that God did not want the responsibility. Nazir got his health back. Immediately afterwards, a man asked if he could sell for Nazir. The man had four other companions who would sell also. Nazir accepted and the rest is history. Nazir's business did very well. During my visit in 1995, Nazir was 88 and Mabel was in her early 80's. I found Nazir and Mabel to be a very complimentary couple. They welcome guests, and truly enjoy their family. They are active members of their Presbyterian Church in West Hollywood. They live in a beautiful cooperative: "one block south of Santa Monica Boulevard and four blocks east of La Cienega" [Mabel's directions]. He came from Homs, Syria on a boat that arrived in Providence, RI. He left his family and made America his "home by choice". He was a runner in Syria and a Dodger's fan here. Nazir was introduced to baseball by John Oujile, Badie's wife Angelle's mother's brother. Mabel was born in the States and an only child. She adopted the Katen family as her own family. They are proud of their three children. Each gave them a boy and a girl for grandchildren. They are great grandparents now. Nazir was born at Homs, Syria, on 13 November 1906.
