Dick served in the US Army from 1946 to 1947. He went to the University of Syracuse to study. He earned his BA in 1951. The Korean conflict brought him back to the military. He served in Korea from 1951 until 1953. After leaving the military, he joined the Executive Training program at A&S. Dick knew he wanted to be an independent businessman and that A&S would help him with the business training. He worked in various departments learning the trade. He was asked to participate in a fund raisining effort he didn't believe in. This put his long term growth opportunity at risk. He was encouraged by an elder Jewish gentleman who advised Dick to get out and start his own business. Dick drew a 50 mile radius around Brooklyn and began searching for a location. He was advised by the NJ Department of Commerce not to go to Princeton. However, Dick had a vision and knew that Princeton would provide the quality of life he wanted. He and a partner ran Home Decor in Princeton from 1957 to 1987. They sold linens, curtains and lamp shades. His shop was well known and a favorite among his customers for the personal treatment they received. His partner died 4 years before he and Jean decided to retire. The landlord raised the rent so high, that Dick and Jean opted out. It took the landlord 7 years to rent Dick's space. He and Jean winter in Pomano Beach on the 26th floor with a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean, Pompano Beach and Boca Raton. They are a very happy couple.
