(Sorcerer Discussion Board / April 25, 2002)

I see Sorcery not as an inherently evil Art, but as an arcane discipline which will make the dedicated practitioner a force unto him/herself.  Sorcery doesn't beg for favors from a deity, a demon or an element.  Through sacrifice, dedication, discipline and study we attain the pinnacle of our power by using the tools we find at our disposal.  This is why Sorcery is an Art; because its success requires the flexibility of a mind that can grasp the potentials that are abundantly around us and the mental discipline to use those potentials to fulfill our goals.

Granted; deities are often seen as creators and hence labeled as "good", and since Sorcery tends to be an Art of pain, fear, domination and destruction it is often labeled as "evil".  To those without the knowledge and understanding of the dark beauty of the Sorcerous Arts, they cannot see the vital role that Sorcery plays in the harmony that is existence.  Without death, pain, and darkness what would be the value of life and light?  For every ying there must be a yang or there is no balance.  Someone must seek for the answers found in chaos and hidden in the darkness in order to stretch the boundaries of what is.  Someone must quest for that which is yet unknown and seek to understand that which was once unknowable.  Who better than Sorcerers?

Sorcery is not the easy route.  Not the path for those of weaker wills and lesser goals.  Our path is not for those who would blink at adversity, shy away from blood and pain or cater to mortal frailties.  Though not our goal, but more as a fact of our nature and our pursuit, the practitioners of Sorcery serve as a baseline reference for mortal existence, serving as both the best and the worst in mortality.  We are not only capable of existing in the darkness of the mortal soul, but also by our nature have the ability to both bring darkness to the light, and to shed light upon the darkness.  Sorcery claws relentlessly at the boundaries of the unknown to expand upon the pinnacles of the known.  Sorcery doesn't fear to look into the darkness of the spirit to discover the hidden treasures buried in the forgotten tombs of the soul.  In the end, the final result of Sorcery is to dare to deify our mortality because in the end, we will walk the bloody path of truth and knowledge where others dare not tread.

The common folk fear Sorcery as evil because in their subconscious they know we dare to make of ourselves gods as we bow to none and adhere to our knowledge of what we are.  While they are to be left to wonder what will become of them as they beg scraps from the ever-weakening sources of their faith.
