| Stratford-on-Avon, the birth place of
William Shakespeare, attracts visitors from around the world.
The city center maintains a distinct charm with parks, a well
maintained canal basin (Bancroft Basin) for visiting boats, plenty
of shopping and the home of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
During our June of 2005 canal trip on the Avon Ring,
Stratford-on-Avon was a highlight stop where we spent two days
moored in the town's Bancroft Basin adjacent to the Shakespeare
memorial and across the park from the Royal Shakespeare
Theatre. (Of course we were compelled to attend the Saturday
evening performance of A Mid Summer's Night Dream.) The
Bancroft Basin is the southern terminus of the Stratford Canal.

Sunday, June 5th, we awoke to the sounds of a
craft and arts market day on the Waterside Street side of the
Basin. Of course the crew could not resist the
temptation to explore. (6/5/05) |

Monday morning on June 6th we depart
the Bancroft Basin, headed down the Avon River. Over the
weekend this canal crossing bridge was covered with tourist
watching each boat lock through and we were grateful that on
Monday morning there were no such crowds! Note that this
is a double-wide lock sufficiently wide enough to handle two
narrowboats side-by-side. (6/6/05) |
