    The back plate has a 1/2 inch hole drilled thru the rubber washer and a 1/4 inch into the top plate.  The slot is a 5/16  inch wide and a 1/4 inch deep.   With the ball mount pinned to the plate and in the right position, the slot is cut to be pointing straight down to keep out  water.  If you want it totally water tight then a little dab of silicon sealer or something similar in the slot when you assemble, will seal it.

    All that is necessary is to drill the 1/2 inch hole after you drill the other holes for mounting the plates.  You can attach the back plate to the outside of the car and drill thru the hole in the plate to get it in the right place.  Just be sure to turn it the same way it will be on the inside.   

For the heavy antennas' the ball mount is pinned to the plate and a slot is cut in the plates so the control wire for the motorized antenna can come out from under the plate.

   The ball mount is pinned to the plate to keep it from rotating on the anchor bolt.  Double pins for lots of strength as well as the pins are of a special kind of material with a high shear strength. The pins are non-conductive.   This set-up should hold just about anything. 

    It is just important to remember to set everything in place before drilling the outside bolt holes to insure that you come out in the vertical position. And the instructions to install this set-up is   HERE

   And if you use these plates to go on top of the vehicle with a pedestal or quick disconnect mount or something of your choice,  then the thick rubber washer makes a great seal against water.
