It has grown from a startup company to a billion dollar sales business and is now being advised to look for strategic alternatives to increase shareholder value. The alternatives include selling the business.

Bowman, E. H., & Singh, H. When does restructuring improve performance? California Management Review, Winter 1999, pp. 34-54.

This article is a comprehensive review of organizational restructuring. Based on the examination of 52 studies in 25 research studies the authors concluded that restructuring fell within three modes: portfolio, financial, and organizational. Each mode had distinctive characteristics and purposes and their results could be measured either by market performance or accounting performance.

This short article looks at Walmart's changes to its web site on Janaury 1st 2000. The new design is an effort to offer airline bookings and car rental capabilities online. A new Web business Wal-mart.com Inc has also been set up.

This article discuss how New York's largest insurer, Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan to restructure as a for-profit organization. It looks at New York's Department of Insurance approval, plans to issue stock, creation of nonprofit charitable foundations, and who will lead the organization.

This article discussed the human resources issues of employee treatment during periods of corporate downsizing. It had three main issues, (1) advance warning to employees of pending changes, (2) open communications within the organization, and (3) the types of support services a company provides the employees at dismissal.

This article describes Allstate's proposed changes to its distribution strategy. It addresses expense cutting plans to eliminate 4000 non-agency jobs and reduce annual expense by $600 million. The article also discusses the CEO's plan to change Allstate's business approach.

Gordon M. "CSX Meets 'retirement' goal: More than 200 Jacksonville jobs eliminate." The Florida Times-Union 12 February 2000, sec. E:1+.

In this article Jacksonville based CSX Corporation announced more than 200 employees under what is termed an early retirement plan. The plan is designed to the company millions of dolars each year. Spokeswoman Kathy Burns said CSX will save $65 million this year. University of North Florida Professor Don Wiggins felt the move was a good decision made by a smart company.

This article deals with the break up of Microsoft Corporation following the antitrust law suite brought against them. With the spin off of Expedia.com, future spin offs may in fact be good with an explosion of new business activity, more innovations and in turn create more return for investors.

Hane, P.L. Bell & Howell will restructure to create to separate companies. Information Today, February 2000, pp. 1,6+.

This article describes the plans for major restructuring by the Bell & Howell Company by splitting into to new companies. The intention of the split is to enable each business to focus on their individual strengths and have better access to capital while retaining talent employees.

This article outlines how CompUSA is pursuing its goal of returning to profitability by cutting 2,440 jobs. Other reorganization issues in the article include centralization of their commercial sales and a new customer service call center.

This article addresses the reorganization of advertising agency Phillips, Team & Myers. The move is being done to protect the company from creditors due to the loss of a primary client. The organization will reform as The Phillips Agency with principals Catherine Team and Dick Myers leaving to pursue new advertising activities.

 In this article Ford Motor Company announces a wide range of management shuffling. The goal is to empower lower-level executives and make the automaker more flexible.

 McDougall, P. Intel reorganizes for push into new markets. Informationweek, January 3, 2000, pp. 91.

 This article deals with Intel Corporation's disclosure of recent internal reorganization of their network communication and computing enhancement groups. The changes are intended to allow Intel to push into new markets in both the wireless and microprocessor markets.

 Muller, J. The One-Year Itch at Daimlerchrysler: Its reorganization may not be enough to bridge culture clashes. Business Week, November 15, 1999, pp. 42.

 This article looks at the one-year anniversary merger of Daimler Benz and the Chrysler Corporation. It discusses the reorganization of DaimlerChrysler that will give more autonomy to their U.S. automotive operations.

 This article discusses Texas-based J.C. Penney Company Inc. restructuring plan 45 department and 289 of its underperforming Eckerds drug stores. The company operates three J.C. Penney stores in the Jacksonville area at The Avenues, Regency Square, and Orange Park malls and a four store in a region shopping center on Dunn Avenue. They also operates 36 drugstores in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties but none have been targeted for closure.

 Ostrow, N. "Surprise split: Baptist, St. Vincent to end 4 1/2-year-old merger." The Florida Times-Union 26 February 2000, sec. A:1+.

This front page article announced the surprise split of what was Northeast Florida's largest health systems. After a 4 1/2 year merger Baptist and St. Vincent's the two hospital will separate and act independently in their strategic direction and decisions. The split is reported as not occurring for financial or business reason. Official state there will be little impact on patient services.

 Chapter 1 of this book discusses the general overview of organizational theory. It discusses the definition of organization, compares theory and behavior and explains what the value is in studying organizational theory.

Chapter 5 of this book discusses what is organizational strategy and compares business-level to corporate level strategies. It also defines and list the Miles and Snow's four strategic types.

 This article describes the new management hierarchy reorganization for network services for the newly converged business unit. The move was made at a conference for investment analysis and resigns to current AT&T presidents to new posts.

 In this article the acquisition of Red Roof Inns by the French company, Accor. The August 1999 purchase for $1.115 billion follows a three year hold out that saved Accor million on the final deal. Centralization of operations and position reductions area also discussed.

Whitford, M. Marriot International restructures management. Hotel and Motel Management, October 18, 1999, pp.23.

 In this article Whitford talks about Marriot International's management restructuring to improve their focus on three business categories - full service, extended stay , and selected service. The article gives a brief look at the three senior vice presidents selected to coordinate activities between the activities.

 Wilson, M. Reinventing The Body Shop. Chain Store Age, August 1999, pp. 104.

 In this article The Body Shop, CEO Patrick Gournay talks about deep changes to operations of the 23-year company. All manufacturing plants have been closed or sold off, four regional operating division have been established, the number of franchises have been reduced and he has taken the company out of the distribution business.
