Arming Sword

The Arming Sword (also called simply a Sword or a 'Single Sword') is the weapon which, along with the lance, won the reputation of the medieval European knight. This is the weapon used by Charlemagne, by the normans, by the crusaders. The Arming Sword is one of the the most versatile hand weapons ever used on any battlefield. It should be noted that the weapon ncorrectly described as a 'Long Sword' in role playing games is actually an 'arming sword.' Long swords are basically two handed weapons. Great Swords and Bastard Swords are subtypes of the Long Sword.

The European arming sword is a versatile and deadly dangerous weapon, particularly when used, as intended, in conjunction with a shield or in more civilian circumstances, a blocking dagger. Surprisingly light and fast, with a deadly reach, it is equally capable of chopping, slashing, and thrusting, and highly effective against both armored and unarmored opponents.
