I have lived in Asheville for the better part of fifteen years. I moved here in 1989 and attended UNCA and Warren Wilson College. During my senior year at Warren Wilson I took a handbuilding class and have had clay in my veins ever since. I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a year and a half in 1994 and 1995 and worked in a pottery supply store that supplied most of New Mexico, West Texas, and Eastern Arizona with clay. This is where I first learned to mix clay and glazes, fire kilns, throw pots, and much more. My work is certainly influenced by the time I spent there. Sgraffito is the potters term for the type of surface decoration I do. The vessel is thrown or turned on the wheel then when it is leather hard I paint it with an underglaze paint. The underglaze is then scratched or carved away to create a design. The piece is fired once and then glazed and fired again. It is a bit time consuming but it produces a beautiful and truly unique piece of pottery. I am available to do custom dinnerware sets, tiles, and other pottery items.
