Wilmington Dream Center includes a transitional housing program for homeless women and families, emergency foster care for infants, and a mentoring program for single men.
Entry into Wilmington Dream Center begins a process of personal rehabilitation and growth with individual attention at every turn. Rev. Susan Miller, one of our inner-city missionaries, lives full-time at Wilmington Dream Center: Women’s Transitional Housing and cares for the women and families there, as well as the larger community. Mr. Nicholas Capps, another inner-city missionary, works at Wilmington Dream Center: Men's Mentorship Program and leads participants into servanthood ministry. We house 16 single women and two families at any one time. We provide for all their basic needs, as well as disciple those hungry in heart.
Rev. Miller and Mr. Capps also train residents of the Wilmington Dream Center in life skills and basic morality. Taught to be honest and trustworthy, residents have their minds renewed by love and example. Life skills such as bathing, personal hygiene, housekeeping, cooking, time management, resume writing, and interpersonal communication are instructed.
Anyone who enters Wilmington Dream Center in active addiction, and all whosoever choose, are sent to Tri-County Detoxification Center and then to a rehabilitation program. After they are "clean" they return to our residential programs to restore their lives to order. They receive education referrals, job counseling, transportation to outpatient programs, regular support group attendance, assistance meeting Department of Social Service requirements for subsidized housing, and legal referrals to deal with criminal and child custody issues. We are also approved to take in women with newborn infants and homeless pregnant women have been able to keep their children while under the supervision and custody of First Fruit Ministries per New Hanover County Court.
Discipleship is provided by our staff and volunteers. All clients receive counseling and teaching that improves how they see themselves and the world around them. Each person is treated as unique and deserving of special attention. The personal relationships built on the street are faithfully maintained in love. Each member of First Fruit Ministries must demonstrate the love of Christ to be effective in eliciting lasting progress in the lives of our homeless neighbors.
