The Scarlet Macaw is arguably the most magnificent bird of the parrot family. With their wide strong wings, macaws can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. They often fly in pairs or small groups and call to each other in raucous hoarse voices.

Macaws appear to prefer higher elevations and forests. They prefer to nest in holes high up in trees and lay one or two eggs.

The Scarlet Macaw is extremely intelligent and can be a very talented talker. This species has a strong personality and should be given a lot of attention and freedom. All macaws will require a large cage plus a stand or play area where they can exercise. This species has a loud voice and can be quite vocal at times.

All large macaw species need a varied diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruits and also nuts, such as Brazil, macadamias, pecans, almonds, etc. Hot peppers of any color are frequently enjoyed by macaws. Dark leafy greens and cooked root vegetables such as beet root, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams, and green beans, lima beans, and carrots are highly recommended. macaws enjoy fresh fruits for a treat and an essential part of their diet, but it should be mostly composed of seed, grain, and vegetables.

Macaws are quite social and can be very friendly with a number of people if socialized well at a young age.
