32. Bryant Forehand was born about 1812 and died about 1860, about age 48.

General Notes: His occupation was a cooper (barrel maker).

Bryant married Elizabeth "Betsy" Peacock , daughter of Unknown and Unknown . Elizabeth was born about 1814, died on 10 Jan 1891, about age 77, and was buried in Forehand Family Cemetery, Wayne County, NC.

Marriage Notes: The Forehand Land was divided into four farms. John Henry Forehand
inherited one part. The farm along the western boundary is known as the
Hyman Pate place; this was obviously the share belonging to Alice
Forehand. Later, it was the home of John Henry Forehand's daughter, Alice
Forehand Taylor, and her husband, Matthew. Most of this land is now owned
by Lina Taylor Chase and her children. The other two farms belonged to
William Forehand, and an unknown recipient.

The road through this settlement was a narrow dirt road that turned south
at about the western boundary of the Forehand settlement, crossed the
slough and ran parallel to the "run" for about 1/4 mile until it
terminated at the Mt. Carmel-Patetown Road. the "run" entered the slough
a few feet east of the bridge. The road was not much more than a path
through the woods and settlement.

When the Rural Free Delivery was established, all of the mail for the
Forehand Family settlement and others who lived beyond them on the above
mentioned road was delivered to mail boxes erected at the junction of this
road and the Mt. Carmel-Patetown road. Mail delivery service did not
begin until the 1930's or early 1940's to the homes of those who lived in
the Forehand settlement. Before R.F.D. service, mail was picked up weekly
at the Post Office in Pikeville.

There was a fishpond on the slough at the back of Grandpa's farm. This
was made by damming up a ditch or small creek. In this area, there were
also numerous "marl holes" in which the local people fished. The "marl
holes" were created when the marl was dug out to be used as fertilizer on
the land.
