Duke is what every combat unit's "first shirt" should be; a rough and rugged leader by example, a careful listener and a precise giver of orders, a wealth of lore and knowledge, and a fair settler of disputes. His experience and coolness under fire bolsters morale and gives the GI Joe team a firm anchor to hold onto even in the worst situations. Offered a battlefield commission, he turned down the chance to be an officer because he felt it would distance himself from his troops. "There's a big difference between calling me 'top' and calling me 'sir.' To me, 'top' always had a homier ring to it." A vertran of countless top-secret special operations missions, Duke also created and ran several classified Special Forces schools. He spends his spare time reading history, because he feels that history books are catalogues of other people's mistakes, and he doesn't intend to repeat any of them.
