For our new guests/clients, in case you didn't already know, below are a few excellent causes/eulogies that the Aesculapian Society has been part of for some great friends of ours and great humanitarian reasons.
In Memory Of Han Gmoser (1932-2006):
We are saddened to inform you of the
passing of Hans Gmoser the founder of CMH. He and his wife Margaret
were friends to us and partially responsible for us leading the
Aesculapian Society. He was truly an incredible and inspiring
person. He will be missed by many.
There is a nice eulogy that is posted on
the CMH website:
www.canadianmountainholidays.com
Here's what we know. Hans had a
bicycling accident and sustained a serious spinal cord injury. He
passed away on July 5th. He made a conscious decision to have life
support removed. He always appeared to be methodical and in control
even up till the end.
From the Eulogy:
According to his wishes there will be no
funeral or memorial service. Margaret and Hans’ family have asked that
you all remember and celebrate Hans in your own way. In lieu of
flowers, he would be honored by a contribution to the Association of
Canadian Mountain Guides:
ACMG Box 8341 Canmore, AB T1W 2V1 Canada 1-403-678-2885
With our deepest sympathy,
Dr Ted & Lisa Ritota
Sri Lanka Tsunami Relief Effort: Our group has donated over $10,000 to "Medical Aid to Sri Lanka (RFMTA)" through Dr. Alex Habel, who for many years has done volunteer work and research in Sri Lanka. We applaud him for giving us a good, trustworthy avenue through which we can help out. Thank you to all that have donated.

In Memory of Ian Campbell; (Mountain Guide, 1955-2007) BY GREG YAVORSKY Ian Campbell was a natural. Climbing, skiing, music, carpentry: he made them all look easy As a young guide, he had some great successes, due as much to his innate sense of what his guests were doing behind him as to his technical skills. On his first trip to Mount Robson, he walked in and camped with the other parties below the icefall. The others all said the icefall was impassable. But the next morning, in the dark, Ian got up, tied in with his client and went climbing. He got to the summit with his guest, climbed back down and walked out. The next summer he flew in and climbed Mt Waddington with the same guest. Ian was always modest about his climbs, but his guests always had big smiles and great stories to tell. Ian joined CMH as a guide in 1980 and soon met and married Dana. Ian and Dana had two children, Jennifer and Scott, who were the great joy of his life, and Ian never tired of sharing stories about them. At CMH, Ian worked in Valemount and the Bobbie Burns, before becoming assistant manager to Franz Fux in the Gothics, where his considerable carpentry skills were much appreciated. With the creation of the Adamant area, Ian became the manager of the Gothics, a position he held until his retirement two years ago. Ian was a fine team leader and mentor to young guides. Guests loved skiing with him, for his easy-going manner and great sense of humour as much as for his guiding abilities and elegant skiing style. It was with great sadness that we learned of Ian’s passing. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a graceful man, a good friend, and a fine mountain guide. From Dr. Ted Ritota: Our group, The Aesculapian Society, together with CMH has set up a fund for the benefit of Ian Campbell’s children, Jennifer and Scott. Some of you are keenly aware of this but for those of you that are not we’d like to inform you of the following. Ian had been the manager of the Gothics Lodge since 1990 and was a great friend to our group. He always welcomed us with open arms…even when we bumped into him while we were skiing out of Revelstoke! Ian, together with us, Franz Fux, and Marty Von Neudegg of the CMH Banff office, were responsible for the origination of the Early December Weeks. These Early December Weeks have become a favorite of many of you. Ian would always get very psyched as those weeks approached. Over dinner one night he told us that having our group was more like a party, an “event” for him and his staff instead of work. He was our good friend and that will never be forgotten. If you'd like to contribute to this fund follow the directions below: These are the details
for the fund for Ian's Kids. Mail a check to the institution below with
all the account details on it or enclosed with it. Updated 2/18/08
