Help For Brittle Nail Syndrome

If you suffer from brittle nails that tend to split, peel, and crack, know that you're not alone. According to dermatologists 20% of women suffer from brittle nail syndrome (also referred to as onychoshizia).

Brittle nails are sometimes linked to internal health conditions such as hypothyroidism and menopause. Medications used to treat high blood pressure can also cause brittle nails, as can deficiencies in iron and vitamins A, C, and B6. The condition also sometimes accompanies skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis.

Brittle nail syndrome occurs when the nail plate is unable to maintain moisture and becomes dehydrated. Brittle nails can occur at any age but is more common in older women. Both the skin and the nails become drier with age. It occurs most frequently in individuals who already have a tendency for dry skin. This is because the syndrome is like having "dry skin of the nails".

Polish is more likely to chip if you suffer from brittle nail syndrome. It is best to apply a fresh coat over existing layers every two to three days. If you are on a nail recovery program you should apply a Biotin & Calcium Growth Serum and a strengthener containing Keratin daily along with therapeutic oil and lotion. Brittle nail sufferers need to keep their nails trimmed short and use a crystal (glass) file that will seal and protect the free edge of the nails.

External factors also cause brittle nails, such as excessive "wet work". Excess use of soap and water with strong chemicals or detergents can also cause brittleness. Wearing gloves will minimize exposure. If the fingernails split but the toenails are strong, that's a clue that an external factor is the cause and not an internal deficiency, disease or disorder.

Biotin is a supplement found to improve brittle nail syndrome. Biotin was first used to treat the cracked hooves of thoroughbred racehorses in the 1980's. It proved so successful that Swiss researchers tested the theory on women. Researchers found that the thickness of the nails of women who took daily Biotin supplements increased as much as 25% and that they also experienced less splitting.

Biotin is naturally found in eggs, organ meats, legumes, cauliflower, broccoli, and mushrooms. Researchers have proved that Biotin supplements are effective in repairing both women's brittle nails and horses cracked hooves with no known side effects.

While there's no complete cure for brittle nails, there are steps you can take to protect them and promote healthy growth. In an otherwise healthy individual, brittle nail syndrome can be treated by applying therapeutic oil and lotion moisturizers, Fluoride treatments and a strengthener containing Keratin to the nails on a regular basis and by taking daily oral Biotin capsule supplements along with a topical Biotin & Calcium Growth Serum. If you suffer from brittle nail syndrome, you should begin a recovery program under the regular care of a professional licensed Manicurist & Onyxologist. Follow the customized home care recovery advice in order to reduce the symptoms of brittle nail syndrome.
