Are you ready for sandal season? You can spring into sandal season the safe way with a pedicure using alpha-hydroxy callus and dry heel therapy instead of the unsafe credo-cutting blade. The credo-cutting blade can cause bleeding or infection if not properly used. It can also cause the skin on the heels and feet to grow back thicker, harder, and faster. Alpha-hydroxy therapy restores skin's smooth texture and moisture balance and feet are left soft, supple and ready for open toed shoes. Bright reds or the classic French are the most popular pedicure polish colors chosen to compliment summer sandal footwear. Classy toe rings and nail art also dress up warm weather footwear. Be sure you choose a safe salon that follows the state guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting pedicure footbath systems.
Numerous articles and news broadcasts have reported public safety concerns about infectious bacteria found in throne-chair whirlpool pedicure footbaths. One recent report stated that more than 130 people caught bacterial infections after receiving pedicures at salons using the throne-chair whirlpool pedicure footbath system. The county health department in Santa Clara, California received complaints of pedicure-linked infections involving 27 salons. The health department cited the salons for improper disinfection of throne-chair whirlpool pedicure footbaths. The high number of complaints prompted the California State Board to inspect 112 salons and out of them 109 received citations involving inadequate disinfection of throne-chair whirlpool footbaths, according to Patti Roberts, communications officer for the Department of Consumer Affairs.
A few years ago a similar report was broadcast about Watsonville, California in which hundreds of pedicure clients were infected with lesions that were linked to contaminated thrown-chair whirlpool footbaths. If footbaths are not properly cleaned and disinfected, hair and skin debris can build up in the tub basin, allowing bacteria to grow to unusually high levels.
These public safety issues prompted the California board to mail out 37,000 letters to salon licensees outlining the proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures for thrown-chair whirlpool footbath systems. The letters were printed in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
