Chapter 7: Tales From the Manufactured Housing Board (Dumb Crook News)
As the title suggests, this chapter focuses initially on actual cases that came before a Manufactured Housing Board. Eight cases are described in detail and they cover everything from misappropriated funds to forged signatures to crack-addicted salesmen. Following a discussion of these cases from South Carolina, the book turns to other examples from different parts of the country. In particular, we examine West Virginia, where no dealer lot audits have been performed since 1999 (even though the federal government pays the state to do this to protect the consumer). Finally, the chapter concludes with an actual instance from Oklahoma which illustrates some of the lessons we have learned in the previous two chapters. The bottom line is that the consumer must protect their own best interests because government agencies -- HUD, in particular -- cannot be counted on. In an industry rife with quality problems, approximately half of customer complaints center on dealer fraud instead. Caveat Emptor: Buyer Beware!
