He David Smith Williams, M.D. who has practice medicine nearly a half a century in Arkansas, was born at Clinton, N.C. in February 1836. His father, Rev. David S. Williams, was a Baptist minister who died in 1898 at the age of 89 years. Dr. Williams received a literary education at Wake Forest College, N.C., took up the study of medicine with Dr. Robinson at Fayetteville, N.C. and attended the Jefferson Medical Colledge of Philadelphia, PA in 1855-56. He then came to Arkansas, settled near Camden, and engaged in farming, in the winter of 1857-58. He attended the Medicial Department of the University of Nashville, Tenn., graduating there from in March 1858, and returning to Arkansas, settled near Arkadelphia, where he did a large practice. The Civil War coming on, he entered the Confederate Service and was surgeon of the Thirty-third Arkansas Regiment, and senior surgeon of General Tappan's Brigade. After the war he resumed the practice at Arkadelphia. In 1881, he came to Texarkana, where he has done a very large and extensive practice both in medicine and surgery. For ten or twelve years Dr. Williams was local sugreon of the Missouri & Pacific, Texas & Pacific and St. Louis Southwestern Railway Companies. He is an ex-member of the American Medical, Arkansas Medical, and American Association of Railway Surgeons. He is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and Independent Order of Odd Fellows; a member of the Episcopal Church and served for years as Warden and vestryman.
