STRUGGLES!!!! - SCAC #9

October 23, 2006 (Spartanburg, SC)
After replacing a clutch after the NTI event, I felt like this was going to be a great event. I always love taking the Z3 home to its place of birth at BMW US Manufacturing, and the Eurofest event is particularly fun.

However, in spite of the fact I won STS2 to close out the SCAC series season, this event was not fun for me. The course was great, but I have recently made some setup changes in the suspension, which have totally left me out in left field. I'll get them straightend out, but the fun sure was "sapped" from this day.

Other BMW Notes: Stuart Kestenbaum's quest for a Perfect 9-in-a-row season came to an abrupt end in the morning rain; Per Olof Ezelius "coned" his way to defeat at the hands of his co-driver Jon Krolewicz; Mike Smith and Dustin Pike were "no shows"; and Perry Boykin continues to become a seasoned driver in his first year of competition. I'm sorry I don't know the official results as yet, but will try to update later. thanks

A Game of Millimeters - CCR #8

October 15, 2006 (Mooresville, NC)
It is said that fooball is a game of inches. If that's the case, autocross is a game of millimeters. Today, my arch rival in the CCR STS2 points chase for 2006 beat me by two one-thousandths of a second to gain a valuable point over me in our battle.

Going into the event, I held a 4 point edge over veteran Miata pilot Rich Little. Now that advantage is a mere 3 points as we head into the last event.

At the speed we were traveling, that works out to about 2mm in distance if you want to imagine the effect of what the photo finish would have looked like if we had been racing.

I finished fourth behind Rich, as Matt Palombi beat us both by about 12 feet for the victory. Nello Alexandri whom was running out of group, was about a foot behind him. So you won't tax your mind, Matt was about a quarter second in front of us, and Nello was only slightly slower.

In other BMW notes, Per Ezelius moved into a 1st place point tie with Steven Rankins, as Per edged Steven out for second place in Pro Class behind Jon Krolewicz.

The last event for CCR is going to be very interesting. I will try to update with times when the results are posted, but in the meantime, I'm really looking forward to the next battle. This is going to be fun to compete in and watch.

Thanks for coming by.

Hurricane Florence!!! SCAC #8

September 9, 2006 (Florence, SC)
It was ironic that SCAC #8 was held in at
Florence Civic Center just as Hurricane Florence was attacking Bermuda. In fact, STS2 provided a "whirwind" of activity itself.

Matt Palombi was on hand with the new STS2 CRX, and had a formidable co-driver with top flite SCR pilot, Garrett Molzer. In addition, Jon Krolewicz was on board as my co-driver.

The two guest drivers shot it out in the feature event, and Krolly emerged with the victory over the CRX. Meantime, I was off "sightseeing" someplace, and forgot to drive. This was my second worse performance of the year....nuff said.

The event offered a great opportunity to see my car in action in the hands of a great driver, and after the event, Stuart Kestenbaum raised the ante as he took it out and went faster than all of us. It was a great weekend in Florence, and I really beleive this is one of the best venues in the Carolinas.

Other BMW Note: Stuart K made it 8-in-a-row in D-Stock, and is starting to look like the SCR "Driver of the Year" - at least he would get my vote. Per Olof won top PAX in the Mini as he prepares for the Nationals in Topeka; Mike Sullivan won again in Tire Class with an SM car.

More later, and as always - thanks for stopping by!

Continental 24 Hours Autocross

September 3, 2006 (Charlotte, NC),
After years of skepticism toward and avoidence of CCR's annual 24 hour event, I found myself "forced" to compete in the 2006 version because of a tight points race. With that said, I am now convinced this is one of the most special autocrosses (and THE most fun autocross) in our nation.

The format is simple. Run as many times as you can over a 24 hour period from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday, and whenever you choose to do so, you may pull up to the starting line and declare an official run which will be scored on the Offical Results. You are alowed to score six official runs counting toward the final results.

The Labor Day Weekend event annually draws top-flite competitors from the Carolinas, as many of them are preparing for the Solo Nationals in Topeka.

The official results may not be sorted and posted for some time yet, but in STS2, E-Stock transplant Justin Mitchell from Raleigh emerged from the darkness of night with a 37.9xx run in his Miata to take the victory. Justin edged out nationally competitive driver, Scott Sawyer from High Point (Honda CRX), who was there for the first 12 hours. Noted drivers Scott Clontz and Jason Mineheart were co-driving with Sawyer, but were entered in Pro Class.

Before the dust had settled on the opening hour of the event, Mineheart, whom usually drives a Honda Civic SI, had burned a 37.5 which would be the standard for STS2 for the entire event. I don't believe that time was achieved by another STS2 car (Pro Class or otherwise) over the 24 Hour period.

I will try to post more when the official results are available, but let me say I left the event happy and satisfied with the Z3. I am more conviced than ever that a Z3 can go to the Solo Nationals in Topeka, and hold its head high in STS2. Thank you.

Orangeburg - SCAC #7

August 19, 2006 (Orangeburg, SC)
I'm always glad when
Stuart Kestenbaum runs before me at an autocross, because he always passes along such helpful information. Today, he guided me to my best performance yet in an STS2 car as I won my 7th in a row at SCAC #7.

It was a good thing he passed me that info when he did, because newly-minted STS2 competitor Matt Palombi started off his STS2 career with a bang. Not that I'm surprised he did well, as we have known all along that Matt is a great driver, but he has seemed to struggle with his CRX in G Stock during his still short tenure in this sport. But this time was different - the car seem to fit him like a glove, and he seemed to flow around the course with a silky fluidity that was lacking before. Matt has found a new home, and I'm going to have to go to work!!!

Other BMW Notes:Stuart Kestenbaumed joined me today with his 7th in-a-row, and he has wrapped up the SCAC D Stock Championship. Additionally, Don Miller won B-Stock and I believe that sew up the SCAC for him. Perry Boykin (SM)and Mike Sullivan (TIR) are in strong positions to win their respective classes after 2nd place finishes, and a special congratulations to fast charging Zack Hawkins for his win in DSP. Dustin Pike was a no-show for the event, and will be hard-pressed to catch Charlie Fullwood in the SCAC E Stock battle. More Later...thanks for coming by.

HOT Time in Columbia - SCAC #6

July 15, 2006 (Columbia, SC)
Sometimes you just simply want to get something behind you, and the 101 degree heat in
Columbia, SC today turned me into quite a "jelly fish" with respect to that attitude. I just wanted to get it over with, and was glad I was in the first run group.

While I was struggling with the heat, Clark Doggett and Marty Bull were struggling with their Miatas on what was a "Z3 friendly" course. Clark came home in second while Marty finished third. The pair of Miata driving "rookies" are getting better, and I'm really going to have my hand full with them next year.

The win was my sixth-in-a-row this year in the SCAC series, and by my calculations, a seventh place or higher finish in the next event would sew up the 2006 SCAC STS2 Championship. The persistence of Marty in this year's SCAC series will keep him in it to the end.

Other BMW Notes:I must wait for the official results to be posted, but I believe it was a good day for BMWs. I believe Joe Oliver and Per Olof came home 1-2 in the pro class, and Stuart Kestenbaum also won his sixth straight in D Stock. Additionally, I believe Jay Weathersby did well in the event and Mike Smith won Tire Class. I will verify and update later. Thanks for stopping by.

Victory at NASCAR Tech - CCR #6

July 9, 2006 (Mooresville, NC)
After the drubbing I took at
Kannapolis last month, I was determined to give it my best effort on my "home course" at NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville today.

The irony is there is no venue at which CCR competes which affords Miatas a greater advantage over my Z3 than the small encombered area we have at NTI. However, Steven Rankins did it again - he masterminded a beautiful couse which somehow seemed to "dodge" all of the curbing and lightpoles, and let us all have fun.

It was a tough day for BMWs as Per Olof struggled to a 7th place finish in pro class, and Shane Eudy's M3 was "broken" as he ran the event in a borrowed Mustang. The pro class for this event was saturated with national championship and national trophy winners, and was one to the toughest single classes I have ever seen.

Lowes Motor Speedway - CCR Xtra

June 17, 2006 (Charlotte, NC)
For those of you on the BMW forums whom stop into this site from time to time, the next time there is a Southeastern Pro or National event, we need to get
Stuart Kestenbaum from Charleston, SC into a competitive BMW.

If you don't want to take my word for it, just browse through the SCR results at www.scr-scca.com and look at the D-Stock results for the last couple of years. Now consider this: not only is his 330cia an automatic, he always runs on street tires. In addition to that, a lot of you know DJ Bruner whom he took to wire last year, and that ain't no easy task.

In fact, I'm not sure he can't take my Z3 into a divisional event and break up the CRX parade better than most of the Miata guys in the southeast have been able to do. And yes....I know I'm a mile behind Feinberg and Sawyer's CRXs, but I don't believe Stuart is that far behind.

At any rate, Saturday at Lowes Motor Speedway in a non-points CCR event that resembled more of a mini-version of a Solo Trials event than it did an autocross, Stuart destroyed me while I was busy destroying the rest of the STS2 field. This group included most of the regular competitors in CCR plus a few from other regions.

Stuart beat me by over a second while I covered third place Justin Mitchell's Miata by a second. Justin is from Raleigh and is a regular competitor in Triad, and Tarheel. Nello Alexandri in a Honda Del Sol finished behind Justin while my usual nemesis Rich Little was next.

The event was run concurently with the annual CCR June Jam Road Race, and it was good to be around some sports car racers again. It is hoped that this will introduce some of our autocross competitors to SCCA Road racing, and help to infuse our club program with some new blood.

Other than being hot, it was a great day and everybody had a blast.

Thanks, Stuart for coming up to Charlotte, and thanks everybody for stopping by. Results at blog.subaruworld.net.

The Ultimate Zoom Zoom Machine

June 11, 2006(Kannapolis, NC)
Sometimes your mind just isn't in the game. At my age, and saturated with 2 days of 90 degree plus heat, when I pulled up to the line and was given the "go sign," I popped the clutch only to find I was in neutral.

I shoulda' just finished the run and called it quits, but it was fun watching Mike Grumbles "come home" from Tennesse, and drive my car to a half second victory over my arch nemesis, Rich Little.

Mike, who is the defending NCAC and CCR C Stock Champion has moved to Nashville, and has been missed in our region, but today, the aggressive Miata pilot came home to drive the Z3 very smoothly in the STS2 victory.

It was an impressive win as Mike managed to turn a faster time in the street-tired Z3 than his old rival Bill Crummett was able to muster in his Hoosier shod C Stock Miata. In fact, the charging Little also was faster on this day than the C Stock driver.

Grumbles win kept me from falling behind in the point standings, as Rich and I both are tied after moving in front of an absent Mike Casino.

I will update other notes when the official results are posted. Until then, thanks for stopping by.

Hot Town in the Summertime - SCAC #5

June 10, 2006 (Columbia, SC)
I guess, the hotter it gets, and the older I get, the more confused I seem to be. I have really been struggling with my car since I added the coil-over suspension setup, and even when I have gone fast, it seems to be in spite of everything I have done. This has led to some "late night test sessions," and some pretty radical changes.

Today, the changes were tire pressures, and after some bad advice from a fellow Z3 autocrosser, I had to do a mid-event about face just to recover and beat a charging Marty Bull. Marty is coming on strong, and the Charleston novice is advancing rapidly in his new Solo career. In fact, he's making it fun for me as I watch him grow as a competitor.

For now, at least, I'm going back to basics which have worked for me in Fort Mill and Summerville, and hopefully Stuart Kestenbaum will be able to co-drive with me at Lowes Motor Speedway on June 17, and maybe he can help me with some setup input.

Other BMW Notes:Stuart continued his winning ways with 5 in a row in D Stock as the destroyed the field on street tires. Per Olof Ezelius won the Pro Class in his Mini, as he and DJ Bruner both beat Joe Olivera this time out.

I will report more results when they are offically posted - In the meantime thanks for stopping in and stay tuned.

Thanks Garrett Knox for the Photo.

SCAC Goes Home - SCAC #4

May 20, 2006 (Summerville, SC)
If
Columbia, Orangeburg, Greer, and Florence are the backbone of the SC Autocross Championship Series, Summerville is its Soul. The venue at Sumerville HS is poured onto white sandy soil, and nestled between Palmetto trees and Coastal Carolina long leaf pines. When you are there, it is no doubt you are in South Carolina. No place else on earth is quite like this.

In addition to that, it's fortunate for me that Summerville is only a dozen miles or so from Charleston, and Charleston is the home of Stuart Kestenbaum who "guided" me to my best performance in an STS2 car today in SCAC #4.

In fact, after my second run of four, Stuart changed my course "attack" strategy totally, and I was able to carry my Z3 to a new level of performance. This was the first time I have been within five percent of the FTD since moving to STS2 this year.

Thanks, Stuart. You've got to be one of the best teachers in the sport today.

Other BMW Notes: Stuart K continued his winning ways in D Stock, making this his 4th win in a row; Dustin Pike finished a strong second in E Stock driving on R Comp tires for the first time ever; Don Miller had a great win with his M Roadster in B Stock; Chris Gillam drove his 318Ti to victory in G Stock; PJ Boykin took another Street Mod win driving a different car - his e36 M; Per Olof Ezelius won Pro with the Mini; and Mike Smith drove like a veteran in winnning tire class again with his e30.

Wow!!! It was a great day for BMWs!

Drought Ended! - CCR #4

May 14, 2006 (Fort Mill, SC)
Today, I returned to victory for the first time this year in a CCR event after 3 straight losses to open the year. The three losses represented the first time I have gone winless for more than two events in CCR since 1976.

The main attribute to the win was in the fact on Saturday I had totally "missed the setup" with the newly installed suspension components. After a night of hard work, and a very early morning of "test-n-tune," I had the car to a point it handled better than in its stock configuraton. On Saturday, I believe it actually handled worse than stock.

The course for CCR #4 was perhaps the best course I have run on in quite some time. The Steven Rankins design was much faster than I would have believed a course could have been at Knights Stadium, and didn't not seem to favor any one type or brand of car.

When the official results are posted, I will update this entry to include BMW Notes - Stay tuned, and thanks for coming by!!!

Tough Day at Knights - CCR #3

May 13, 2006 (Fort Mill, SC)
It was a tough day for me in CCR#3, but it was a good day for STS2. With seven pre-entries in STS2 for the weekend, five cars were on hand for the Saturday event in a CCR 2 event weekend.
Mike Casino emerged victorious as he was the only car to brake into the 36 second barrier.

I will cover the event in more detail when I write up tomorrow's event and the official results are posted, but both Casino and Rich Little drove the Laguna Blue Miata with authority today as they finished one-two in a tough STS2 field.

I was struggling with car setup as I was unable to appproach the blistering Miata pace set by the Little-Casino pair, but was finally able to put together a run which was within three tenths of a second of the "dyanmic duo."

With the addition of TCKR Koni Coil-overs I totally guessed wrong on the setup, but at least we only have to wait until tomorrow to try to correct it. I did leave Knights Castle with some idea of what not to do next.

With the newly added feature of negative camber adjustment for the front end, I believe I have got to go "back to the drawing board" regarding tire pressures. The Kumho MXs did not respond well to my customary pressures, and tomorrow lower pressures will be in order.

Other BMW notes: I will update in the second day coverage when the official results are posted, but one thing I do know is Per Olof Ezelius finished second with his Mini Cooper in the always tough Pro Class behind Nissan driver Don Bruner, Jr. who seems to be returning to form. I believe the Pro Class in CCR and SCR is one of the toughest autocross classes in the country. Congratulations Per and DJ!

More later, and thanks for coming by!!!

A Little Help From Your Friends - SCAC #3

April 23, 2006 (Florence, SC)
I've repeatedly said I think
Stuart Kestenbaum is one of the finest BMW autocrossers in the country, and I can't tell you how much he has helped me this year, but today at Florence Civic Center he helped me find some of the driving techniques that I have been searching for since I returned to this sport after a 25 year absence.

I won't go into a lot of details, but after driving my car today in "fun runs," and beating my best time by more than a second, he helped me understand my steering wheel input in a way I had not experienced since 1979. Oh sure, there were flashes of that "understanding" last year as I ran Hoosier tires, but since I returned street tires this year, I have been lost. Any strides I have made this year were largely due to Stuart's input.

Well today, he took me to a new level. Not just a new plateau to "rest" on, but a new level from which I can continue to advance.

Thanks, Stuart. You don't know how much I appreciate it.

Other BMW notes - Stuart Kestenbaum made it 3-in-a-row in D Stock; Mike Sullivan won a hard fought Street Tire victory; Don Miller looked good in his B Stock win; PJ Boykin had a strong second place in Street Mod; Dustin Pike was where he was supposed to be on street tires in E Stock; Greg Lipscomb is "killing 'em" in G Stock with his Mini; and Joe Olivera took top PAX time of the day with his Mini. Thanks.

Bringin' one Home - Finally!! - SCAC #2

March 19, 2006 (Spartanburg, SC)
I've been in a "funk" since the move to STS2. As a driver, I haven't concentrated well. The car is not competively set up for STS2 competition, nor will an effort be made to set it up until I get myself "into the game."

And....on top of all that, today's event was held at a venue at which I have never won.

But....today it all came together at BMW US Manufacturing in Greer, and for the first time in seven tries in less than 2 years, I finally won an event at the birthplace of the BMW Z3.

I'm not going to say much except "I was ready!" For the first time in my memory, I went out and ran my fastest time on my first run, and came off the course thinking that I had just gone as fast as I possibly could go. And for the first time this year, I was looking at Rich Little's Laguna Blue Miata in my rear-view mirror, rather than through the windshield.

It felt good to win. Maybe it's time to start prepping the car a little more. I shared some interesting setup ideas with Stuart K today. Speaking of ....

Other BMW Notes: Stuart Kestenbaum grabbed the D Stock crown with his 330cia; Dustin Pike trailed the R-Comp Miata parade in E Stock with his Z3; Joe Oliveira took fastest PAX and first place in a tough Pro Class; Mike Sullivan took 2nd in Street Tire with his 325i; Greg Lipscomb's Mini S edged out Chris Gillam's 318ti in G Stock, Jody Justice drove his 320i to 1st in E Prepared; and Jay Weathersby is "hanging on" in DSP.

Thanks to everyone whom came out, and thank you all for your support.

CCR #2 at Knights Castle

March 12, 2006 (Fort Mill, SC)
This will be one of those "short and sweet" notes. Today, I drove what is probably my worst event since I returned to this sport. It was all but embarrasing.

I appologize to my friends and fellow BMW fans whom often stop by this site and come out to support me. My efforts will be greatly stepped up in the near future.

Congratulations to Rich Little for his performance in STS2 as he turned in his best performance yet.

It wasn't a great day for BMWs, but it was good to have Dustin and Don up from SC with their Roadsters. Look forward to seeing more of you guys in the future.

Cold Day at Orangeburg - SCAC #1

February 18, 2006 (Orangeburg, SC)
First off, I would like to thank Garret Knox of CSP Miata fame for the photo. Next, I would like to thank the 92 entrants who braved cold weather and the threat of rain to make the SCAC event #1 a success.

I was fortunate and excited to edge out Marty Bull in his Miata for the STS2 win. In fact, until it was over, I didn't even realize he was breathing hard down my neck. I hope Marty will be a regular in STS2 this year, because great competition always makes us better drivers.

I was also excited to see so many promising newcomers at this event, and some old faces that did well. My friend and fellow Mooresville native, Michael Bright, brought his 350Z to O'Burg and took top time of the day, as well as top PAX time. Congratulations, Michael!

Also there is quite a bit of good BMW news from SCAC #1. Dustin Pike came out in his 1.9 Z3, and finished 3 in E Stock, narrowly missing second place by less than .2 seconds. Jay Weathersby ran a strong 3rd in the always strong DSP class, and this time had some e30 company from Zack Hawkins who finished less than a second behind him and in front of his Dad, David. I believe this was Zack's first event on R comp tires. Way to go, Zack!

Per Ezelius won PRO class in his Mini S, and Greg Lipscomb won G Stock by beating Teresa Hammock. Additionally, Mike Vitha brought his Z4 from Georgia to compete in A Stock. I hope Mike decides to run more SCAC events this year.

That brings us to D Stock where Stuart Kestenbaum took the honors. I believe this is going to be Stuart's year to bring home the SCAC trophy in his 330cia. I am still convinced no one autocrossing a BMW in the country is any better than him, and he helped me out tremendously on this day. It always helps to have a "helping eye" watching you, and he helped me understand some of the things I have been doing wrong as I return to street tire competition.

I simply felt faster today - thanks Stuart.

Next event is "HOMECOMING" as the SCAC travels to BMW Manufactu

STS2..A New Beginning - CCR #1

February 5, 2006 (Fort Mill, SC)
The good news is: nationally competitive STS2 driver Jim Feinberg from
Raleigh did not show for the event, so I had a real chance to win.

The bad news is: Mike Casino drove in Rich Little's Miata.
The bad news is: It was Cold!!!
The bad news is: Casino was Hot!!!

For the first time in his young Solo career, Mike Casino drove a Miata in anger, and performed admirably as he won the first round of STS2 competition the CCR/SCCA event #1 at Knights Castle. I was able to hold on to second place in front of a charging Rich Little, who probably had the best event of his equally young career, and two more Miatas driven by Jonathan Eiss and veteran Andy Monfalcone.

Having 5 entries is good news for the fledgling STS2 class - especially in the North Carolina where the this class has struggled to gain entries. More good news comes from the fact that 2 more Miata drivers were entered in STS2 in the Novice Class for today's event.

STS2 is a Street Touring (Street Tires only) class which was created in 2004 by the SCCA to provide a venue for 2 seat sports cars to compete on street tires.

I am excited about the prospects for the class in 2006, and even more excited about the prospects of competing in CCR and the SCAC in only one car this year. Particularly one car for which I do not have to transport racing tires all over the Carolinas.

This will be a season-long development of last years SCAC Championship winning 1.9 Z3, and I hope the rest of the year is as rewarding as the first event in CCR for 2006!

Other BMW Notes: Joe Olivera and Per Ezelius were 1-2 in the Pro Class with Minis; Tony Hodges drove Chuck Tegeler's new "Monster" e30 to 2nd in SM in the car's first outing; and..Bert Croes and Greg Hahn made debutes in ASP and BStock, respectively.

More later...Thank you.
