Appointments to Local Housing Authorities

The Georgia Municipal Association's Legislative Policy Counsel have outlined their support for legislation that will allow the appointment of a maximum of one city official to serve on the board of the local housing authority.  Their explanation, according to their 2007 Legislative Policies publication is that "Local housing authorities were created to provide housing opportunities for low to moderate income families.  Due to the investments made daily by cities in providing a market for affordable housing, a city official should be authorized to serve on the board of local housing authorities."  While the Jesup Housing Authority agrees with the importance of a strong working relationship with city government, there is also a necessity to prevent politics from influencing a housing authority's HUD regulated policy.  National legal counsel have also advised that the policy may be in violation of the PHA's Annual Contribution Agreement with HUD.  The Jesup Housing Authority strongly opposes the introduction of any legislation based on this principle.
