Elizah
Hodges was reared in Greenwood County near Cokesbury,
SC. From early sketchy accounts, she and her family
belonged to Joe Rosemond. Elizah married William
Butler and were the parents of two daughters and
one son - Harriet, Nancy and Isaac.
Isaac
(1840-1931) was sold to Robert Ellis of Due West, SC
and thus, began the Ellis Family Lineage (it
was customary for a slave to take on the last name of
his or her owner).
Isaac
was not allowed to fight in the civil war so he continued
as a slave and remained loyal to Robert Ellis. He
was very frugal and saved whatever valuables he came
in possession of. It has been rumored that after
the war, Isaac had saved enough money to even lend
money to Robert Ellis. He would say, "none of
my descendants would begin their lives without owning
property.
Married to Martha Kennedy
(1850-1898)
They had 8 sons and 2 daughters
