Atoms : The Neutron


The neutron is the largest particle in an atom. It is located in the nucleus of an atom and has no electrical charge.

 

Discovery 

Neutron showing 1 up and 2 down quarksThe neutron was discovered in 1932 by the Enlgish scientist James Chadwick.  The nuetron is made up of 3 particles called quarks. Each neutron contains 1 up and 2 down quarks.

Neutrons can be removed from the nucleus in Nuclear fission.

Neutrons are about nm in diameter.
