King James Translation: “Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.”
Interlinear Translation: “Sufficient to such a one is this rebuke which is by the greater part; so that on the contrary rather ye should forgive and encourage, lest with more abundant grief should be swallowed up such a one.”
Strong’s Concordance Translation: “SUFFICIENT = to arrive, competent as if coming in season, i.e. ample in amount or fit in character, content enough, good, great, large, long while, many, meet, much, security, sore, worthy. TO SUCH A MAN = truly this, i.e. of this sort to denote character or individuality, like, such a one. IS THIS PUNISHMENT = esteem, i.e. citizenship used in the sense of a penalty, superimposition of time, place, order as a relation of distribution of rest and direction in a value i.e. money paid, or valuables, by analogy esteem especially of the highest degree, or the dignity itself, honour, precious, price, some. WHICH WAS INFLICTED (REBUKED) = to tax upon, i.e. censure, or admonish, by implication forbid, straitly charge. OF MANY = more in quantity, number or quality, in plural the major portion, exceed, more excellent, further, very greater, more excellent, further, very greater, longer, very many, greater part, yet but. SO THAT CONTRARIWISE = the opposite, on the contrary. YE OUGHT = should, it is and was necessary as binding, behoved, be meet, must needs be, needful. RATHER = more in a greater degree, better, far the more and more, so much the more. TO FORGIVE HIM = to grant as a favor, i.e. gratuitously, in kindness, pardon or rescue, deliver, frankly forgive, freely give, grant. AND COMFORT HIM = call near, i.e. invite, invoke by imploration, hortation, or consolation, beseech, call for, be of good comfort, desire, give exhortation, intreat, pray. LEST PERHAPS = lest somehow, lest by any means, by some means, haply, where negate. SUCH A ONE BY SWALLOWED UP = drink down, i.e. gulp entire, devour, drown. WITH OVERMUCH = more superabundant in number, degree, or character, greater, much more, overmuch. SORROW = sadness, grief, grievous, grudgingly, heaviness.
