King James Translation: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together; as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not.”
Interlinear Translation: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem who killest the prophets, and stonest those who have been sent to her, how often would I have gathered thy children, in the way a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and ye would not.”
Strong’s Concordance Translation: “O = a note of exclamation. JERUSALEM = founded peaceful. WHICH KILLEST = to slay, to kill outright, figuratively to destroy, put to death. THE PROPHETS = front show shine, a foreteller, by analogy an inspired speaker, by extension a poet. AND STONEST THEM = to throw stones, i.e. lapidate. THAT ARE SENT UNTO THEE = set sport, i.e. by implication to send out properly on a mission, put in, send away, send forth, send out, set at liberty, stand away. HOW OFTEN = how many times. WOULD = to determine as an act, choose or prefer, by implication to wish, be inclined to sometimes gladly, to be about to, to delight in, desire, be disposed, intend. I HAVE GATHERED = to collect upon the same place, gather together. THY CHILDREN = produce, a child as produced. TOGETHER = to collect upon the same place, gather together. AS A HEN = a bird as rising in the air, female domestic fowl. DOTH GATHER HER BROOD = new, younglings, nestlings. UNDER = beneath, thoroughly, covertly, moderately. HER WINGS = feather wing. AND YE WOULD NOT = not to determine as an act, not choose or prefer, not wish or be inclined, not to be about, not to delight in.
