King James Translation: “So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them”

Interlinear Translation: “And believed the men of Nineveh in God; and they proclaimed a fast and put on sack clothes; from their greatest even to their least.”

Strong’s Concordance Translation: “SO THE PEOPLE = a mortal, man, person, me. OF NINEVEH BELIEVED GOD = to build up or support, to foster as a parent or nurse, to render firm or faithful, to trust or believe, to be permanent or quite, morally to be true or certain, to go to the right hand, assurance, bring up, establish, be faithful of long continuance, steadfast, sure, trusty, turn to the right. AND PROCLAIMED A FAST = fasting, to cover over the mouth. AND PUT ON SACKCLOTH = a mesh as allowing a liquid to run through, i.e. a coarse loose cloth or sacking used in mourning and for bagging hence a bag for grain. FROM THE GREATEST OF THEM = great in any sense, hence older, also insolent, mighty, noble, proud. EVEN TO THE LEAST OF THEM = abbreviated, i. e. diminutive in size, quantity or number, or figuratively in age or importance, least, lesser, younger.
