King James Version: “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it: for their wickedness is come up before me. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.”
Interlinear Translation: “Arise, go to Ninevah, the city great, and cry out against it; for has come up their evil before Me, but rose up Jonah to flee to Tarshish from before Jehovah.”
Strong’s Concordance Translation: “ARISE = abide, accomplish, continue, endure, get up, make good, perform, rouse up, set up, stablish, stir up, strengthen, succeed, be upholding. GO TO NINEVEH = to walk, carry, ber, bring, depart, lead forth, march, prosper, cause to run. THAT GREAT CITY = older, insolent, turn aside from the road, sojourn as a guest, to shrink, fear as in a strange place, gather for hostility as afraid, dwell, gather together, sojourn, stand in awe, be stranger. AND CRY = accosting a person met, to call out to, address by name, proclamation, preach, proclaim, pronounce, publish. AGAINST IT = above, over, upon, a downward aspect. FOR THEIR WICKEDNESS = bad, evil, adversity, affliction, calamity, displeasure, distress, grief, mischief, wretchedness, wrong. IS COME UP BEFORE ME = the front, anciently, eastward, aforetime, eternal. BUT JONAH ROSE UP = abide, accomplish, confirm, get up, perform, rouse up, establish, make to stand up. TO FLEE = to bolt, to flee suddenly, flee away, put to flight, make haste, run away, shoot. UNTO TARSHISH = the region of the stone. FROM THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD = the face as the part which turns, countenance, favour, forefront, fear of.
