May Cocktails

Bell, Book and Candle (1958)

James Stewart and Kim Novak

Bell, Book and Candle is a great Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart Classic from 1958 that has a sophisticated dash of cool, refreshing fizz, sort of like a cocktail stirred by spritely, summer solstice witches, their recipe secret a whoosh of mint from the garden.

It also stars Jack Lemmon, Hermione Gingold, Elsa Lanchester, and Ernie Kovaks---all highly esteemed actors of their day. Wow, and the wonderful cast is only the first thing going for Bell, Book and Candle.

Kim Novak plays a sophisticated witch who lives with her familiar, Pyewacket. in an apartment behind her antiquities store in New York City. James Stewart enters her life as the fiance of an old nemesis/friend in Kim's life so Kim decides to lure Stewart's character away with her enchanting charm, a few magical spells thrown in for good measure. She doesn't realize that her plan will backfire when she falls in love with Stewart.

Jack Lemmon plays Kim's wacky brother, and of course, he's a warlock; Kim and Jack frequently join family and friends, all, too, witches and warlocks, at the local jazz club, The Zodiac.

Bell, Book and Candle is set during the holidays so a big city, holiday spirit permeates the movie which is a festive touch of Christmas in summer. James Stewart's lovable dash and Kim Novak's mysterious, camphoraceous charm shake up one sparkly martini cocktail in a cozy jazz club, evening breezes whipping in from the street. Bell, Book and Candle is holiday spirit, magical mayhem, and lush romance 1950's style.

Take a sip of Bell, Book and Candle, and like me, you'll soon be adding it to your collection of movies that you go back to time and again for a refreshing break from the ordinary.

See you at the Zodiac Club.....
