Drinking to Destruction

A True Story

My mother began drinking before I was born.  I was the oldest and only girl of four children.  When my mother was sober, she was a good and kind person.  She would help anyone and everyone liked her.  In the early years of her drinking she got drunk maybe once every month or so… but alcohol does not leave you there if you continue to drink it.  Friend, if you drink do not be deceived, if you keep drinking it will destroy your life and the lives of those you love.

By the time I was about twelve years old my mom was drinking on a weekly basis.  Most of the time it was on the weekends.  My dad traveled and she tried to drink away her loneliness.  When her drinking became more frequent, she knew she had a problem. Guilt started taking its toll on her life.  She tried many times to quit, but she was addicted.

Throughout my teen years she steadily became worse.  I worried about her constantly.  Sometimes she would be drunk for several days.  Her marriage fell apart and she and my dad separated and eventually divorced.  She met a man who was also an alcoholic and soon married him. Sometimes he would beat her up and we would be called to the hospital in the middle of the night.  Eventually he killed her.  I saw the heartache and turmoil in her life as well as in the lives of my brothers and I.  My mother was only forty-nine years old when she was murdered without mercy by her drunken husband who hoped to collect on an insurance policy.

The world and the Devil wants you to think that drinking is glamorous, but it is not glamorous for a young girl to stand in a courtroom having to see pictures of her dead mother lying in a pool of blood.  God’s word says in Proverbs 20:1 "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."

Friend, alcohol is a deceiver.  If my mother were still here, she would tell you that alcohol will rob you of your joy and peace.  Alcohol will keep you from spending time with your children.  Alcohol will keep you from knowing and loving your grandchildren.  She would tell you that alcohol will destroy you.

Friend, there is another deceiver, his name is Satan, who not only wants to deceive you with alcohol, but he wants to deceive you about God’s only way to heaven.  The Bible says in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."  Friend, we are all sinners.  Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."  Romans 10:13 says ‘For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."  Friend, why not call on Jesus today and ask Him to save your soul.  You will never regret it.
