In 1997, there was a slight format change, which shortened the tournament to one day. This had a significant impact on the final rounds of play from a sobriety standpoint. Rather than playing hungover, the best of the best were now playing after many rounds of Marquise of Queensbury Rules.
Again, Bruce Mason was our champion, remaining cool and defeating Dave Obringer even with a majority audience of heckling Obringers. However, as the picture at right demonstrates, many believe Mr. Mason paced himself throughout the day, giving him a distinct sobriety advantage by the time the Championship Match was contested. A separate ``Defending Champion's" cooler, to be monitored by Hord Hardin, is expected to alleviate any such problem in 1998. |
