Cookie Madness
I went to the store the other day,
To buy some milk, bread
and ham.
Just a short list, that’s all I would buy,
And have some lunch in the park.
I knew that they purposely put the milk
In the back, so you’re tempted to buy
The other goodies you must pass to get there.
I vowed no extras would lure me this time.
I entered the store and skirted the side
Quickly to avoid their
insipid greetings.
Then maneuvered through the snacks and beer,
Made a right and found the aisle clear.
A sprint to the back in short order I did.
Grabbed a carton of 2%, and not breaking stride,
Moved down two isles to
the bread.
Quick reverse to the cold cuts, and found the
ham on sale.
Then back to the front, and through the
self-serve line.
I was feeling triumphant, mission accomplished.
I left through the other front door,
And started for the car.
But just on the sidewalk outside, I was
confronted
By a girl about 10, dressed in green and brown.
Oh No.
The girl scouts had me surrounded.
“Would you like to buy some cookies, sir?” she
asked with a smile.
Her eyes twinkled and she was sooo cheerful,
How could I say no and darken her day?
So I followed her to the table, where her scout
leader looked on,
And I beheld the stacks of cookie boxes piled
high.
Green ones, red ones,
yellow ones, blue ones.
So many choices, so
little time.
There were Tag-A-Longs, Trefoils, and
Do-Si-Dos,
Caramel Delights, Dulce
de Teches, and Thin Mints,
Lemon Chalet Cremes.
Daisy-Go-Rounds,
Thanks-A-Lots,
Lemonades, Shortbreads. and
Thank U
I stared for long minutes, they all looked so
good.
Oh but for the wisdom
of Solomon I wished for then,
Yes I had tried that one before, and I really
loved those.
These are just too good to pass up. And lemon, I love lemon.
I knew that the decision would have to be soon.
I had been there so long and it was almost
noon.
“Oh, just give me one of each”, I said in the
end.
I left with twelve boxes, and as I tore up my
Shopping list on the way to the car,
I realized that I was going
Need a bigger cookie jar.
