Ellen appears in the 1880 Watauga County census as a single head of household containing her two sons, Clinton, 5, and Joseph, 2. Ellen’s mother, Lucy,and her brother, Arthur, are also listed. Lucy is shown as widowed/divorced, but divorced is correct since her husband, John, remarried in 1858. I do not know who the father of Clinton and Joseph was.

Clinton and Joseph are still single and living together in 1900 in Washington County, Virginia
