In the 1840 Wilkes County census, he and his wife are in the 30-40 age group.  There are three children:  a boy and a girl in the 10-15 age group and one girl in the 5-10 group.

John and wife Sarah are shown in the 1850 Watauga County census.  He is 49 years old, Sarah is 42.  Daughter Nancy, age 15, is the only other household occupant.  Son Elijah and his family are living next door.

In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Watauga County censuses, John is shown with his second wife, Martha.  There are no other household occupants.
