 Morgan was born in Ashe County, North Carolina in July, 1945, according to the 1900 census.

 

Morgan enlisted July 8, 1862, age 18, in the 5th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry.  He transferred to Company D on November 1, 1862.  On August 31, 1863 the muster roll has comment, “deserted July 24, 1863, at Big Creek Gap, Tenn.  He transferred to Company B, 65th Regiment (6th Regiment, North Carolina Cavalry) on August 3, 1863 [apparently transferred while AWOL] (30).  He subsequently enlisted and mustered into the Union army’s Kentucky 53rd Infantry on September 13, 1864 at Covington, Kentucky.  He mustered out on September 15, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky (26).

 

In the 1870 Ashe County census, Morgan is living with his mother Dicy and brother Solomon.  He later moved to Missouri as a farmer.  He then entered Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois.  After graduation in 1879 he resided in Eskridge, Kansas and operated a medical practice and drug store (59).

 

The 1880 Wabaunsee County, Kansas shows Morgan with his wife, 22 year old Mattie, and new born son, Rufus.  Mattie was the sister of Millie Ann, the third wife of William H. Trivette, Morgan’s brother.

 

The 1900 Wabaunsee County, Kansas census shows 54 year old Morgan and his 26 year old wife, Clara B.  They had been married eight years at the time.  They had a four year old son Powell.  Twenty year old Rufus was also living in their household.  Mattie was living alone elsewhere in Wabaunsee County, listed as divorced.
