The number of contradictions in the available documents on this man is great, but I’m convinced it is all the same person.

George’s Kentucky death certificate says he died on October 11, 1962 in Jenkins, Letcher County, Kentucky, where he lived.  That document states his birth date was February 5, 1898 and that his age at death was 67.  One or more of these facts has to be incorrect.  The same document says his father was Will Cable and his mother was Jane Estep (maiden name).

The Social Security Death Index says his birth date was July 5, 1898 and his death date was October, 1962.

His Social Security SS-5 form states his birth date as April 1, 1897.  The form is dated November 27, 1936, is typewritten, and the employer’s name, Consolidation Coal Company, is ink-stamped.  George signed the document with an ‘x.’  His parents are listed as John Lewis Trivett and Jane Estep, and his birthplace is shown as “Ashville, Ash County, N.C.  There was a John Louis Trivett in Watauga County, born 1872.  His wife is Lena Jones, but according to the 1900 census, they had been married only two years.  This does not explain how or when George came to Kentucky or what happened to his birth mother, Jane Estep.

His World War I draft card says he was born May 10, 1896.

The 1900 Watuaga County, North Carolina census lists a 19 year old Jane Cable, married, as a servant in the Carol Smith household.  Also shown is her

one-year-old son, George Cable, born July, 1898.

Because the 1900 census information and the Social Security Death Index match, I believe he was born George Cable in July, 1898 in North Carolina.  Sometime later his surname was changed to Trivette, not a unique event in those days, possibly due to some type of relationship with John Lewis Trivette.

George is found in the 1930 Pike County, Kentucky census as a 33 year old married male born in North Carolina.  The birth name of his wife, Alafare, was Maggard and was determined from Kentucky vital statistics, which recorded the mother’s maiden name.  Alafare Maggard is shown in the 1920 Pike County census living with her mother.  Alafare is shown as married but her last name is Maggard, not Trivette.  There is no sign of husband George or oldest child, Ballard, who was also known as Willie.
