John served in the Tennessee 13th Regimental Cavalry, Union Army. He enlisted at age 18 and mustered in on January 1, 1865. He mustered out on September 1, 1865 (67). It is interesting to note that his brother Joel served in the Confederate Army.

John was born April 16, 1845 and died August 17, 1886. His wife, Mary Ellen, was born June 15, 1841 and died June 17, 1933. They are both buried in Trivett Cemetery in Avery County, North Carolina along with John parents, Samuel and Rebecca (66).

In the 1930 census, 88 year old Mary is head of household to son Pashley and six grand children.
