- November 23, 2001

Mrs. Susie Lou Turner, 69, passed away November 23. Funeral services were conducted November 28 at St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Shiloh with Rev. John Pollard officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Turner was born May 3, 1932 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Roscoe and Salley Emma Turner.

Survivors include two children, Lynn and Stewart Turner, both of Atlanta; three sisters, Johnnie King of Atlanta, Annie Mae Melson of Manchester, and Thelma Copeland of Shiloh; one brother, Sol Turner, Jr., of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Zollie Harris, Julius Wilson, Trenay Turner and Stewart Turner, Jr.; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Doris M. Barnes, 90, of Manchester, passed away November 25 at Riverside Nursing Center in Thomaston. Crypt side services were held November 30 at Manchester City Mausoleum with the Reverend Mickey Grubb officiating.

Mrs. Barnes was born June 2, 1911 in Talbot County, daughter of the late David Hugh and Marian Hanson McCrary. She was a homemaker, co-owner of Barnes Antiques, and a member of Manchester First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Dawn Reynolds of Pensacola, Florida; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Barnes.

ROBERT LEE HOLLOWAY
April 29, 1924 - December 6, 2001

Robert Lee “Jack” Holloway, 77, of Woodbury, passed away December 6 at Hospice Atlanta. Graveside services were held December 9 at Woodbury City Cemetery with the Reverend Jay Knight officiating.

Mr. Holloway was born April 29, 1924 in Coweta County, son of the late Robert Nelson Holloway and the late Carrie Crumley Holloway. He was a US Navy veteran having served during World War II, was a retired sheet metal worker in construction in Duluth, and was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 85.

Survivors include two sons, Neal Holloway of Duluth and Randy Holloway of Fayetteville; two daughters, Wanda Williams of East Point and Kristy Rohm of Locust Grove; 18 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Mr. Holloway was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Ruth Holloway and one son, Robert Kent Holloway.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Holloway may be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319.

Ms.   Willie Evelyn Callaway, 74, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away December 9 at Cedar Hills Nursing Home in Jacksonville. Crypt side services will be conducted December 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Manchester City Cemetery Mausoleum with Reverend Cullen Clements officiating.

Ms. Callaway was born September 2, 1927 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late William Clifford and Nettie Self Callaway. She was a homemaker and was a member of West Point Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Callaway Porter of Peachtree City; one brother-in-law, Johnny Heggood of Jacksonville; one nephew, Dale Porter of McDonough; two nieces, Deborah Porter Wall of Powder Springs, and Connie Sue Heggood of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cathryne Callaway Heggood.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Willie Mae Owens, 87, passed away December 5. Funeral services were held December 11 at New Hope Baptist Church in Manchester with Reverend J. D. Waller officiating.

Mrs. Owens was born September 8,, 1914 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late George W. and Mary E. McCoy. She joined New Hope Baptist Church in 1930 and was joined in Holy Matrimony to Samuel D. Owens in August, 1938.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel D. Owens; four sons, Bill (Rita), Frank (Joan), Sammie, and James; three daughters, Earnestine (Tillman), Billy and Barbara; 14 grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

WILLIE GLEN COPELAND
December 9, 2001

Funeral services for Willie Glen Copeland, 83, formerly of Manchester, will be held Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. from the Valley Grove Baptist Church in Woodland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The pastor, Reverend Jimmy Copeland will officiate. Mr. Copeland died Sunday, December 9 in LaGrange after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Copeland was born in Talbot County to the late Pleas and Ann Holmes Copeland. As an adult he moved to Atlanta where he worked as an orderly for Grady Memorial Hospital and late Emory University Hospital where he retired.

He is survived by four children: Kirk (Lois) Copeland of LaGrange, Brenda (Dwight) Harper of Germany, Michael Copeland of Manchester, and Margaret (Clifford) Terry of Chicago, Illinois; one brother, Jimmy (Bennie Mae) Copeland of Shiloh; two sisters, Lila Brown and Shirley Simpson, both of LaGrange; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.

The family may be contacted at the home of his brother, Jimmy Copeland in Shiloh.

ALFONSUS PYNENBURG

Alfonsus Pynenburg, Jr., 64, of Hogansville, died December 9 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. The funeral service was conducted December 12 in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Jimmy Chapman officiated.

Mr. Pynenburg was born September 22, 1937 in Holland, son of the late Alfonsus Andreaus Maria Pijenburg and the late Josephine Henrika Pijenburg. A resident of the West Georgia area for 34 years, he was a retired golf course superintendent, was a former Boy Scout leader, and was a member of the Catholic church.

Survivors include his wife, Edna M. Pynenburg of Hogansville; one daughter, Karen Pynenburg of Pine Mountain Valley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alfonsus, III and Robin Pynenburg of Warm Springs, and Marcus John and Judy Pynenburg of Pine Mountain Valley; two stepdaughters, Mary Rebecca Young of Wetumpka, Alabama and Samantha McCollough of Luthersville; two stepsons, James Ray Hunter of Bremen and Jeffery Hunter of Luthersville; four sisters, Elssie Tipsword of LaGrange, Mary Dimick of Cooperstown, New York, Jo Rotter of Canastoga, New York, and Ansje Rasmuson of Ballston Spa, New York; one brother Will Pijenburg of Cooperstown, New York; five grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

THOMAS FRANKLIN WARD

Thomas Franklin Ward, 59, passed away December 4 at his home in Manchester. Graveside services were held December 8 at Mt.  Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Michael Lott officiating, assisted by the Reverend Jimmy Bowden.

Mr. Ward was born November 29, 1942 in Coosa, son of the late Wilbur Levi and Ruby Phillips Ward. He was a retired mechanist and ark welder, was Baptist by faith and was a former Merchant Marine in Florida and Louisiana.

He is survived by  his wife, Gloria F. Ward of Manchester; two daughters, Tina Emerson of Fayetteville and Joy Fischer of Riverdale; one stepdaughter, Jennifer Ward of Manchester; and two stepsons, Jeff Wright of Griffin and Mark Wright of Cannon City, Colorado; two sisters, Janet Dorcas of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Sherril Giddens of Minis, Florida; six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Alice Taylor, 86, of Manchester, passed away December 10 at her home. Funeral services were held December 16 from the Salem Primitive Baptist Church of Talbot County with Reverend John Pollard officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Talbot County to the late Arthur Culpepper and the late Sennie Bussey. At an early age she joined Powell Baptist Church and later moved her membership to Salem Primitive Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late H. K. Taylor and the mother of 20 children, eight of whom preceded her in death. She was dedicated to her church, her family, and her community, always there in the time of crisis to do whatever she could to make things better.

Survivors include 12 children, Willie Mae Copeland of Atlanta, Murry Harris of Chicago, Illinois, Frances Lawrence of Talbotton, Frank Taylor and Lucy Griffin, also of Chicago, Martha (Willie) Ruth of Decatur, Jean Williams of Talbotton, Joan Mack of Atlanta, Stanley Taylor of Cleveland, Ohio, Bernadine Taylor of Hollywood, Florida, Elder Norman (Margaret) Taylor of Fairburn, Roy (Gloria) Taylor of Woodland; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Kimbrough of Decatur, Mrs. Alberta Williams of Manchester, Mrs. Mattie Thomas of Talbotton; two brothers, Sead (Ida) Bussey of St. Augustine, Florida, Minister Lee (Mary) Culpepper of California; and several grandchildren.

Elmer Lee Carpenter, 89, of Shiloh, died December 12 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital. Funeral services were held December 14 at First Assembly of God Church, Manchester, with C.R. Hicks and Rev. Cary Hicks officiating. Music was provided by Sheryl Shirey and Chris Hicks. Burial followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Jack Tappa, Buddy Brawner, David Duncan, Chuck Brown, Ricky Smith, Levi Dickerson, Greg McGouirk and Pete Nolan serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers were Nookie Meadows, Grady Thompson, First Assembly of God Church Board members, and the Adult Sunday School Class.

Mr. Carpenter was born December 24, 1911 in Kaufman County, Texas, son of the late William Arthur Carpenter and the late Mary Ellen Baldwin Carpenter. He had worked for the old Callaway Mills in Manchester and had been owner and operator of the Magic City Shell gas station. He was a longtime member of the First Assembly of God Church where he had been active in the Adults Sunday School Class and all other church activities. He was also a member of the Olive Masonic Lodge #10, F&AM, Talbotton.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Hubbard Carpenter of Manchester; one son, Billy Wayne Carpenter (Linda) of Manchester; three daughters Rosemary Allred (Slick) of Henderson, Texas, Ellen Westbrook of Warm Springs and Beckie Thompson (Danny) of Shiloh; one sister, Ollie Horger of Jasper, Texas; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Charles Kelley, 64, of Greenville, died December 15 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. The funeral service was conducted December 17 in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend David Parker and the Reverend Mark Raughton officiated and interment was in the Greenville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bill Lasseter, Bill Roberts, Joey Thrash, Jimmy Lasseter, Lee Todd, Sandy Garrett, Jimmy Blackmon and Hulett Glover.

Mr. Kelley was born January 14, 1937 in Meriwether County, son of the late Harvey and Ada Eggleton Kelley. He was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County and was employed for 41 years as a land management technician for Mead Coated Board, Inc. He was a deacon and Elder of Greenville Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Mrs. Lorene Kelley of Greenville; three sons, Chuck Kelley of LaGrange, Joel Johnston of Manchester, and Thomas Johnston of Greenville; three sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Lasseter and Mrs. Elizabeth Brazil, both of Greenville, and Mrs. Jane Farrer of Lanette, Alabama; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Sara Connally Marston, 94, of Charleston, South Carolina died Thursday, November 29, 2001 at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Mrs. Marston was born January 17, 1907 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Cicero Wilton and Mattie Ruth Robertson Connally.

She was a former public school teacher and operator of a restaurant and tearoom.

The graveside funeral service was held Wednesday, December 5, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery at Alvaton.

The Reverend Winston Skinner officiated.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Nieland of Charleston; grandchildren, David Nieland of Indianola, Indiana, Susan Tuttle of Leesburg, Virginia, Ben Nieland of Kitridge, Colorado; great grandchildren, Ben Tuttle, Ashley Tuttle, Sue Nieland; sister-in-law, Margaret Marston Teed of Camden, Delaware; and nephews and nieces, including Eunice Carr of LaGrange.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Mr. Barnes was born July 14, 1939 in Raleigh, son of the late Lee Jordan Turner and the late Susie Barnes.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Barnes of Atlanta; five daughters, Yekether Barnes, Cynthia Barnes and her friend John, Lisa Kinloch and husband Daniel, Suzette Carter and Tamika Barnes; eight grandchildren, Jalisa, Jahad, Malcolm, Brandon, Shenecia, Veronalissa, Shimeka, and Korvotney; one great grandson, Zyekevious; four sisters, Grace Gardner and husband, Bishop Willie Gardner of Atlanta, Janie White of Manchester, Susie Andrews and husband Horace, Bernice Williams and Charles, all of Atlanta; one brother, Bill Jackson of Warm Springs; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harrison and Walter Lee Barnes and three sisters, Mary Thomas, Annie Bell Jenkins, Emma Line Hunt.

Thomas C. Wyche, 66, of Moreland, died December 19 in Luthersville.

The funeral service was conducted December 21 in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.

The Reverend Johnnie Nunis and the Reverend Jerry Eley officiated and interment was in Southview Cemetery in Moreland.

Pallbearers were Don Conway, Mike Farr, Buddy Puckett, Woody Daniel, Kim Colquitt, and Jackie Caldwell.

Mr. Wyche was born February 3, 1935 in Coweta County, son of the late Clark and Belle Newby Wyche. A veteran of service in the US Army, he was a lifelong resident of Coweta County, was a retired carpenter, and attended the Grantville Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Juanita Wyche of Moreland; one daughter, Mrs. Susan Davenport of LaGrange; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Betty Hammett of Covington, Mrs. Helen Yerta of LaGrange, Mrs. Dianne Branch of Stockbridge, Mrs. Lucile Howard of Manchester, and Mrs. Marlene Roberson of Grantville; one stepson, Ramon (Bo) Howard of  Warm Springs; one sister, Mrs. Polly Lee of Carrollton; two brothers, James Wyche of Moreland and Billy Wyche of Pavo; two granddaughters, Mandy Tollman and Nicole Tollman; four step grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.
