FLOY SIDNEY STEVENS
September 19, 1930 - June 4, 2001

Floy Sidney Stevens, 70, of Warm Springs died Monday, June 4, at Dogwood Health Facility in Fairburn.

Funeral services will be held at Warm Springs United Methodist Church Wednesday, June 6 at 4:00 p.m. and burial will follow in the Warm Springs City Cemetery.

Mr. Stevens is the son of the late Ruth Butts Stevens and Floy Sidney Stevens, Sr. of Thomasville. He retired from Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation as an orthopedic technician. He was a member of Warm Springs United Methodist Church where he sang in the church choir.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Anne Morgan Stevens.

Mr. Stevens is survived by one daughter, Joyce Melton of Newnan; two sons, Donnie Stevens of Jacksonville, Florida and Tracy Stevens of Manchester; and four grandchildren.

Mary Lucille Stewart, 75, of Macon died Thursday, May 31, 2001.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Hart’s Mortuary in Macon with Reverend Jimmy Corbitt and Reverend Jeff Morrow officiating. Burial followed in Middle Georgia Memory Gardens in Macon.

Pallbearers included Chester Stewart, Scott Stewart, J. D. Chapman, Lawrence Crews, Thomas Watkins and Steven Williams.

Mrs. Stewart attended Shurlington Baptist Church in Macon and was preceded in death by her parents, John T. Patterson and Clara Christian Patterson; and by a brother, Billy Patterson.

Mrs. Stewart is survived by her husband, T. Howard Stewart of Macon; two daughters, Mary Ann Stewart of Macon, and Claira and husband, Ray Crews of Macon; two sons, Steven H. Stewart of Woodbury and Ray Stewart of Macon; 2 grandsons and their wives, Wesley and Heather Crews of Macon, and Brandon and Michelle Crews of Macon; granddaughter and husband, Melandie and John Ogletree of Ringgold; and three great grandchildren.

Hart’s Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Hamp Huff, 50, of Woodland died Tuesday, May 29, 2001.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Anderson and Marshall Funeral Home in Manchester with Reverend Alfred McCrary officiating. Burial followed in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Huff was born on August 26, 1951, the son of the late Joe and Susie Huff of Woodland. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters: Sam Huff, Eddie Huff, Joe Huff and Emma Steverson.

Mr. Huff is survived by three brothers, Henry Huff and John (Ella Weese) Huff both of Wilmington, DE; one sister, Gussie (Ralph) Mitchell of Thomaston; one aunt, Francis Paschal of Woodland; twelve nephews, Stevie Huff of Wilmington, DE, Greg Huff of Baltimore, MD, Gred (Matilda) Steverson of Shiloh, Rodney Steverson of Woodland, Martin (Angela) Steverson of Talbotton, Ariek (Chasity) Steverson of Morrow, Richy (Joyce) Mitchell of Thomaston, Willie (Sharon) Mitchell, Jr. of Forsyth, Jay Huff and Rob Huff, both of Newark, DE, Anthony Huff and Mark Huff of Wilmington DE; five nieces, Laketha Huff and Shelia Huff of Woodland, Jineen Huff of Newark, DE and Tammy (Vincent) Lowman of Thomaston; and a host of great nieces, nephews and cousins.

MILDRED LANE CHAPMAN

September 23, 1906 - May 31, 2001

Mildred Lane Chapman, 94, of Shiloh passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ernest Hinson officiating. Burial followed in Old Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Chapman was the daughter of the late Annie Lou McDonnell and James William Lane of Harris County. She was a retired nurses aide from Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute of Rehabilitation and lived in Harris County her entire life. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Shiloh and the widow of Ray C. Chapman.

Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by her son, Charles Lane Mansfield.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Marie Wallace of Marietta and Deloris Mansfield Specht of Lawrenceville; two great grandchildren, Christy Blalock and Daniel Wallace, both of Marietta; an d several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brown was born on January 28, 1942 the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elder Brown, Sr., in Meriwether County. He was married to Teresa Brown of Woodland, on June 19, 1999 and was employed at Mead in Greenville.

John Jackson Newman, 85, of Manchester died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 1 at Macedonia Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend J. D. Templeton officiating and assisted by Reverend Herschell Turner. Burial followed in the Bethesda Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Robert Shirey, Steven Evans, Kenneth Wright, Andy Goodin, Kevin Carpenter, and Paul Brown.

Mr. Newman was a native of Meriwether County. He was born February 23, 1916, the son of the late Andrew Jackson Newman and Ollie Rebecca Bishop.

He was a retired textile worker and was employed by Callaway Mills Co., in Manchester. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Cornelia Wright Newman of Manchester and Ruth Revell of Doran, Georgia; three sisters-in-law, Zelma Garrett, Ina Mae Moreland and Aurelia McDowell; one brother-in-law, Hiriam Wright; several nieces and nephews, Peggy and Bobby Shirey, Judy and Harry Goodin, Jackie Moore, Lee and Sara Ann Revell, Cedric and Judy Crews, Martha and Roger Evans, Martha Cornwell, Julius Wright, Linda and Billy Carpenter and Jimmy and Priscilla Revell.

Johnny Fred Freeman, Sr., 74, died May 31 at Emory-Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan. Funeral services were held at Gay First Baptist Church June 3 with Reverend Stoney Setzer officiating, assisted by Reverend Joe Arthur. Burial was at Crouch Cemetery in Gay.

Mr. Freeman was born July 29, 1926 in Troup County, son of the late Henry Madison Freeman and Nellie Boatner Freeman. He was retired as sales manager of Atlanta Baking Company, was a Navy veteran of World War II, was a member and deacon at Gay First Baptist Church, and was a member of Union Masonic Lodge #28 F.&A.M.

Survivors, other than his mother, include his wife, Inez Redding Freeman of Gay; three daughters, Barbara Knight of Sharpsburg, Jan Harrison of Lawrenceville, and Janelle Garner of Newnan; two sons, Johnny F. Freeman, Jr. of Senoia, and Henry Freeman of Moreland; one sister, Bonita Bishop of LaGrange; one brother, Jesees Freeman of Gay; 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

John Henry "Trapper" Looney, 83, of Warm Springs died June 5 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital. Funeral services were held June 8 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with Dr. Bob Patterson officiating.

Mr. Looney was born June 20, 2927 in Craig County, Virginia, son of the late Lee L. and Nannie Cora Welch Looney. He was retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs and was a veteran of the US Navy, having served during World War II.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory Looney of Warm Springs, and Jack R. Looney of Falls Church, Virginia; one daughter, Susan Anderson of Opelika, Alabama; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Roberta Amrani Looney.

Mrs. Annie McCoy Linebaugh, 85, of Manchester, died June 5 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital. Graveside services were held June 7 at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Brother Ed White officiating.

Mrs. Linebaugh was born December 25, 1915 in Meriwether County, daughter of John Robert McCoy and Sarah Frances Buchanan McCoy. She was a homemaker and had worked as a cashier at Goody’s and at Brown’s Prescription Shop in Manchester. For several years she worked as a telephone receptionist for Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Homes. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Warm Springs, and the Ladies Auxiliary of The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. She was preceded in death by her husband, S. W. "Liney" Linebaugh, Jr.

Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Myrtle and Ed White of Warm Springs, and Mary McManus of Columbus; two sisters-in-law, Leamon McCoy of Warm Springs, and Willene McCoy of Fairbanks, Alaska; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pauline Gertrude Hattaway, 77, of Manchester, died June 10 at Alvista Care Home in Greenville. Graveside services will be held June 12 at 10:00 a.m. at Manchester City Cemetery with Reverend C. R. Hicks officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Nolen, Chad Hattaway, Chet Hattaway, Chuck Ramsey, Colin Ramsey, and Tom O’Neal.

Mrs. Hattaway was born November 24, 1923 in Polk County, daughter of the late Claude and Inez Rhodes Ramsey. She had attended First Assembly of God Church, was retired from Milliken after working 42 years in the textile industry. She received an award for her volunteer work with the Salvation Army and had worked as a school bus monitor with the Meriwether County Board of Education. She also well known in the area for her work as a baby sitter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Wilbur Hattaway.

Survivors include one son, Frank Hattaway of Manchester; one daughter, Brenda Kirkland of Panama City, Florida; three sisters, Joyce O’Neal of St. Mary’s, JoAnn Knowles of Colton, California, and Brunette Brewer of Roanoke, Alabama; two brothers, Forrest Ramsey of Prattville, Alabama, and Ray Martin of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Marjorie W. Royal, 86, of LaGrange and formerly of Manchester, died June 1 at Hospice LaGrange after an extended illness. A garden memorial service was held June 16 at the home of her grandson, Steve Livingston of Pine Mountain.

She is survived by her children, Charlene, Maurice, and Cynthia.

Sherman Morris Ray, 50, of Dallas, Georgia, died June 11 at his mother’s residence in Manchester. Graveside services were held June 13 at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Reverend Jimmie Chapman officiating.

Mr. Ray was born November 24, 1950 in Marion County, son of Mildred Bloodworth Ray and the late Robert Morris Ray. He was a warehouse worker and member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred Ray of Manchester; wife, Gloria Jean Quattlebaum Ray of Dallas; three sons, Jody Ray of Manchester, Jeff Ray of Tampa, Florida, and Jamie Ray of Daytona, Florida; two stepdaughter, Jessica Quattlebaum, and Tabbaca Rose Quattlebaum, both of Dallas; one stepson, Samuel Morgan Quattlebaum, also of Dallas; three sisters, Margie Hughes of Manchester, Mary McLeod of Hurey, Mississippi, Charlotte Railey of Manchester; two brothers, Johnie Ray and Rocky Ray, both of Shiloh. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Clay and a brother, Emory Ray.

Joaquin Rios, Sr., 70, died June 17 at his home. A memorial service will be held June 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Hamilton with Father Roland Madden officiating. Private family interment will be at Meriwether Memory Gardens.

Mr. Rios was born September 7, 1930 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, son of the late Elena Martinez Rios and the late Emilio Rios. He had lived here since 1967, and retired as a supervisor for Goody Products after 32 years.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen Rios of Manchester; one daughter, Aileen Hamby of Griffin; three sons, Gaberiel Rios of Riverdale, Joaquin Rios, Jr., of Manchester and Edward Rios of Royston; one sister, Maria Pena of Bronx, New York; one half-brother, Emilio Rios of Santurce, Puerto Rico; two half-sisters, Zaida Rios and Luz Carrillo, both of San Juan, Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Rios Scarboro, Jessica Rios Taylor, Ashley, Lesley, Lauren and Rachel Rios, and Gaberiel Rios; and two great grandchildren.

MRS. LILLIAN MAHONE ROLAX

Mrs. Lillian Mahone Rolax, 93, passed away June 17. Funeral services were held June 22 at Calvary Baptist Church in Manchester with Elder Britt officiating. Interment was in Pine View Cemetery.

Mrs. Rolax was born May 22, 1908 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Will and Mattie Mahone. She joined Calvary Baptist Church at an early age and faithfully supported the church for years. She was united in Holy Matrimony with the late Willie Rolax on January 7, 1926. She was affectionately called "Miss Lit" by her neighborhood friends and the many children that came to see her. Mrs. Rolax was employed as a cook/dietitian in the Meriwether County School System until her retirement.

Survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, a playson, Arthur Henry, and longtime resident niece, Zelma Mosley. She was preceded in death by five sibling: William, Monroe, Myrtle, F.G., and Pim.

CALVIN EDWARD CLEMENTS

Calvin Edward Clements, 47, of Atlanta, passed away June 18 at his home. Funeral services were conducted from Leverette Hill Baptist Church in Warm Springs with Reverend Tracy W. Neal, pastor, officiating.

Mr. Clements was born December 4, 1953 in Manchester, son of the late Bessie and Steward James Clements. He joined Leverette Hill Baptist Church at an early age and attended public school in Manchester. After graduation he moved to Atlanta and was employed by Seaboard Railroad for a number of years. Later he was employed by Dove, Inc., also in Atlanta.

Survivors include one daughter, Farrah Clements of Atlanta; two sisters, Verna Mobley of Atlanta, and Bessie Marshall of Warm Springs; one brother, Joe Mobley, Jr., also of Warm Springs; one aunt, Lila Martin of Warm Springs, and one uncle, Clifford Harris of Los Angles, California; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Thornton.

Robert B. Ferrell, 83, of Woodbury, died June 18. Memorial services were held June 21 at Woodbury United Methodist Church.

Mr. Ferrell was born in Selma, Alabama November 12, 1917, son of the late Lawson Glenn Ferrell and the late Bessie Goolsby Ferrell. He retired as a lawyer for Marsh & McLennan Insurance Consultants in Atlanta and was a member of the Georgia Bar Association. He was a member of Woodbury United Methodist Church, was a US Navy veteran of World War II and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Spradling Ferrell of Woodbury; two daughters, Patricia Meyer of Deer Park, Texas, and Susan McCravy of Johnston, Iowa; one sister, Elizabeth Shelton of Tucker; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Naomi Ruth Smith, 90, of Manchester, died June 22 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester June 23 with Reverend Ernest Hinson officiating. Burial followed at Manchester City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Wigley, Sid Wigley, Leonard Wigley, Jim Fuller, Rob Clay and Jeff Dryden.

Mrs. Smith was born June 9, 1911 in Coweta County, daughter of the late Lindie Smith Bowie and the late Robert Lee Bowie. She was retired from Callaway Mills after 40 years, was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and was the widow of Hugh M. Smith.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Jim Dryden of Peachtree City; two grandchildren, Jeff Dryden of Dacula, and Laura Roundtree of Tamarac, Florida; six great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.

Cox Funeral Home of Manchester was in charge of arrangements.

EDGAR GENE CALLAHAN
November 6, 1934 - June 20, 2001

Edgar Gene Callahan, 66, of Waverly Hall, died June 20 at Columbus Hospitce House. Funeral services were held June 23 at Waverly Hall Methodist Church with Reverend Rob McDaniel, pastor of Waverly Hall United Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by Dr. Brad Hicks, pastor of Wynn Brook Baptist.

Burial was at Parkhill Cemetery with Jimmy Evans, David Beverly, Ralph King, Jack Stroud, Jim Turner, and David Hodge serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were fellow licenses funeral directors from GFDA and AFDA.

Mr. Callahan was born November 6, 1934 in Waycross, son of the late Ora Lee Jordan Callahan and the late Edgar Clinton Callahan. He graduated from Waresboro High School in 1952 and John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee in 1960. Mr. Callahan retired in 1996 as a licensed funeral director from Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Columbus and after his retirement, worked as a part-time director for Cox Funeral Home in Hamilton and in Manchester. He was a former Deputy Coroner in Harris County, member of Waverly Hall Methodist Church and the Waycross Masonic Lodge #305 F.&A.M.

Survivors include his wife, Montez Callahan of Waverly Hall; one son, Frank Brown, also of Waverly Hall; four daughters, Rhonda Wood of Eatonton, Kim Mauger of St. Petersburg, Florida, Mary Ellen Jones of Columbus, and Beverly Wyatt of Athens; two brothers, James Callahan of Statesboro, and Ronald Callahan of Bluffton, South Carolina; two sisters, Frances Taylor of Waycross and Faye Reese of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; one great grandson, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Cox Funeral Home of Hamilton was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. JEWELL IRENE CALLAWAY
September 13, 1909 - June 24, 2001

Mrs. Jewell Irene Callaway, 91, of Manchester, passed away June 24 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church June 26 with Reverend Malcolm Davis officiating, assisted by Reverend Craig Williamson. Burial was at Manchester City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Randy Wind, Pat Wind, Bert Wind, Brent Loeffler, Robert Eubanks, and Max Baxley.

Mrs. Callaway was born September 13, 1909, in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Robert Wesley Stephens and the late Clara Wilkins Stephens. She was retired from the accounting department at Georgia Power Co., was a member of Manchester First Baptist Church and was a former member of the choir.

Survivors include two nephews, Herbert W. (Billy) Wind and wife, Mary, and Robert H. (Bobby) Wind, all of Cairo; great nephews, Randy Wind, Bert Wind, and Pat Wind; great nieces, Melodee W. Loeffler; great-great nephews, Fuller John Wind and Mark Wesley Loeffler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman C. Callaway.
