THRASH & LIGON:  Looking for info on THRASH, William A. (Andrew, I think), b. 1818-1820 or so, m. Virginia Frances LIGON; they had son, William Hammett THRASH, b. abt. 1856, m. Martha Ann Frances BRYAN,  they had 2 children, Andrew Jackson THRASH, b. 2/21/1886, and Mamie Lee THRASH.  Found William and Virginia on 1850 census for Meriwether Co., GA.   Gives his age as 30 and hers as 19.  Also found a "LEGAN" family on same census.  I believe that is a mispelling of LIGON and may have been Virginia's folks. Don't have info on any siblings of William Hammett.  Any info as to parents/sibs or anything else about these families would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking information about the family of Thomas Randolph EDWARDS in the Woodbury area.  According to his grandson's childhood memories, he was a school principal in the area in the 1930's and possibly 1940's and his wife was a teacher.  They lived outside of town on a farm, but the rest of their family lived in Woodbury. Their children were Thomas ?, Walter, Mayne (1892-1978), Elise (1890-1986) and Mitchell (ca 1900-1958) . Mayne married and moved to Thomaston, GA, Elise married a Chunn, who owned a store in Woodbury, and Mitchell, the youngest, left home at 15 and moved to Atlanta, where he died in Feb 1958. Mitchell and his wife, Rose Irene Goddard, are buried at West View Cemetery in Atlanta. Can anyone tell me when and from where the Edwards' family moved to Meriwether County? Where are they buried? Any information about the family would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking for family connections to the ancestors of Mary Wesley Rosser who married Zachary Pierce Lee in Meriwether County in 1869.  Mary Wesley and Zachary Pierce Lee had five children: Laura, Albert, Rupert, Pierce and Lucy.  Mary Wesley Rosser died while her children were very young.  At some time while the children were young, this family lived in Alabama (Goodwater?).  I'm not sure whether they lived in Alabama before or after Mary Wesley Rosser died.  Zachary P. Lee arranged for family or friends in Meriwether County to provide foster care for his children, where they were reared.  He re-married shortly after Mary Wesley Died and seems to have left Meriwether County (to Alabama?) with his second wife.  Can anyone help me connect Mary Wesley Rosser to her Rosser relatives?

I am the great grandson of Franklin Marion BUTLER. The following is from sketchy research done many years ago by cousin Lucy Clark of Gay, Ga. (now deceased). Franklin Marion BUTLER was born on May 27, 1839, possibly in South Carolina.  He married Susan CLARKE of Meriwether County on November 29, 1867. Susan CLARKE was born at Rocky Mount in northern Meriwether County, on October 5, 1842, the daughter of Henry Gaines CLARKE and Nancy Frances RAY CLARKE of Meriwether County. Henry Gaines CLARKE was born in South Carolina on September 15, 1817 or 1818, and died August 24, 1907. Nancy Frances RAY CLARKE was born in South Carolina on January 22, 1822, and died September 13, 1858. They were married in Meriwether County on December 1, 1838. Henry Gaines CLARKE was the son of Samuel Thomas CLARKE, said to have been born August 5, 1774, and to have moved to Cherokee County from South Carolina in about 1824, and Rebecca MASTERS CLARKE, said to have been originally from near Richmond, Va.  Nancy Frances RAY CLARKE was the daughter of George Austin RAY and Linda (Malinda?) McCLAIN RAY of Meriwether County. The siblings of Susan CLARKE BUTLER were Martha Ann ('Sis") CLARKE, Rebecca ("Becky") CLARKE EDWARDS, Samuel Thomas ("Tom") CLARKE, Tom's twin brother George Austin ("Aus") CLARKE, William James ("Billy") CLARKE, Nancy Jane CLARKE ESTES, Frances ("Fannie") CLARKE LAMBERT, Henry Billington ("Manny") CLARKE, Warren Brantley ("Buddy") CLARKE, and Savannah CLARKE (died at age 4). I have a little information about each of these.  Franklin Marion BUTLER, who enlisted in the Confederate Army with Company E, 20th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, in 1861, lost a leg at the Battle of Southern Pines outside Richmond early in the War.  He died October 2, 1889 (?). His wife, Susan CLARKE BUTLER died in Carrollton, Ga., June 7, ??, and is buried at Rocky Mount, Meriwether County. If you have any information on the BUTLER, CLARKE, RAY, or McCLAIN or McLain(e)] families of Meriwether or Carroll Counties, please let me hear from you. Thanks.

Greetings: I am compiling information for a book entitled: "Bibliography of Civil War Manuscripts in the state of Georgia."  This book will list and briefly describe all Civil War manuscript collections held by organizations in this state.  Due to the large number of such organizations, I cannot visit them all.  I need a couple of volunteers to help me with Meriwether County.  The task involves visiting local libraries and museums to check and see if they have any unpublished Civil War era letters or diaries.  After that a brief description of the item is all I need.  In most cases this entire process can be completed in an hour or two.  All volunteers will be credited for their work in the foreword of the book.  This work will be of great importance to historians and genealogist all across the nation.  If you would like to help me, please contact me.

My great great grandfather, James W. MOON, and wife, Mary DRAKE Moon, lived in Greenville, Meriwether, GA in 1870 census. They lived in Greenville district in census of 1870 and he was a shoemaker. They moved in 1879-1880 time frame to Girard, Russell, AL. One of his sons, Nathaniel M. Crawford Moon and wife, Emily Reynolds Moon, lived in Luthersville, Meriwether, GA in same census of 1870. They moved also prior to census of 1880 to Waverly Hall, Harris, GA and was a farmer. James W. Moon and Mary Drake Moon were members of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in TROUP (LaGrange), GA in 1868, but moved membership in 1869-1870. Barnes lived in Meriwether County in 1850 according to the census of that year. His only daughter lived with him. She was the wife of Asa Reeves. She was Sara Elizabeth Barnes. His son William Cunningham, brother of Sara Elizabeth Barnes Reeves was living with his family in Coosa County, Alabama in 1850. Thomas Barnes died in 1853 and apparently did not have a will or one that I can locate. Would have had an administration of his estate? His heirs would be the above named son and daughter. Any information about these family members will be eagerly and gratefully received. Thank you.

Also want to know if this is same person as "L.C. FOWLER, born Jan. 1, 1847, died Jan. 30, 1886" engraved on tombstone in Ranburne Baptist Church cemetery, Cleburne County, Alabama. Recently I have been trying to get information on my father's Family.  I am a 43 year old African American who is in search of answers to my past.  I currently live in Los Angeles, California.  I moved here in 1966 with my mother who is now 86 years old.  This is the information that she gave me about my father's family. My grand father's name was Rufus MCCRARY and he was married to Essie (unsure of spelling.  He had a least two sons, Wiliie James MCCRARY and Ernest MCCRARY and a daughter Clara MCCRARY who had two daughters, one was named Penny.  Bernard, Ronnie, and Dwight, MCCRARY are the sons of Earnest MCCRARY and Mozelle. I also believe that Willie James had a son named Nathaniel MCCRARY. I strongly believe that they are from the Meriwether County area.  If anyone can provide me with any information with regards to the African American MCCRARYs, I would greatly appreciate the information. Sincerely,

I am looking for information on my maternal great Grandparents, James Crews, who married Mollie E. L. Todd, they lived in Douglas County in 1879-1893, when my great grandmother passed away at the age of 29.  I have found in Meriwether Co., GA, land deed for Mary E. Crews, who appeared to be a Grasham before her marriage.  Mollie Todd Crews' mother was Mrs. Mary E. Todd (husband unknown) and on the Douglas County land deed she stated she was from Coweta.  But I found a church cemetery on 362 Hwy with Todd & Crews in it.  And my uncle Alvin Crews said they had an aunt Lockey.  In the cemetery that I found is a Lockey Todd.  Do you know any think about any of this family?  I have been at a dead end for over five years.  My granddaddy Joseph P. Crews, and his brothers, Mike & Emmett & sister, Mattie raised themselves after 1893.

My ancestor, Joshua T. STANFORD, resided in Meriwether Co., Ga for several years.  He was married to a Susan JONES.  Records that I have indicate he bought and sold several tracts of land in Meriwether Co. and eventually purchased a lot in Carrol Co., Ga.  Joshua T. and Susan had a family.  He became acquainted with a THOMAS family in Meriwether and he and a Nancy THOMAS began a family.  I found no record of marriage disolvement with Susan and no record of marriage with Nancy.  He and Nancy moved to Florida in the latter part of 1840. He is on a census 1850 in Jefferson Co. Florida.  Susan is on the 1850 census in Carroll Co., Ga 1850.  Tax records on her in 1853 but nothing on her after that time. Have information on Stanford family I will share.

Seeking information about William BARNES who died in Meriwether County, Georgia in 1835.  I believe he was probably the brother of Jordan BARNES, a prominent citizen of Meriwether County, since Jordan was administrator of his estate and guardian of his five children.  I am particularly interested in where William BARNES is from and who his parents are.  Jordan indicated in the 1850 Census that he was born in Virginia.

Seeking information on Hampton G JAMES 1822-1900 originally from SC and migrated to Meriwether county in the 1840's. He is buried at the Raleigh Methodist church. He was married in the late 1840's to Sarah BARTLEY 1829-1870 and after her death to her sister Harriett FOWLER BARTLEY who had previously been married to Drury FOWLER. Their parents were John BARTLEY 1798-1847 & Hethy (Esther) CORLEY 1798-1846 who were from SC. They came to Meriwether or Harris county about 1840. Hethy is believed to be buried at the Mountain Creek Baptist church in Harris county. Hampton's siblings who also came from SC and his children show up in the Meriwether census from 1850 through 1900 mostly appearing in the Raleigh and Warnersville areas.
