The C6 Corvette (6th Generation) is the 6th major change to the model.
The C6 was introduced in 2005 and incorporates a lot of changes to the Corvette while still maintaining the soul of America's Sports Car.
One really noticeable change is that for the last 40+ years the Corvette has had popup headlights. With the C6 model the headlights are exposed with a clear plastic cover molded to the shape of the body.
The size of the car was changed slightly (5" shorter, 1" narrower, but the wheelbase is actually longer than the last generation). A lot of the major changes were the introduction of modern technology.
There's a DIC (Driver Information Center) display on the instrument panel. You can scroll through all your instrument readings, program in a personalized greeting for 2 different drivers, and view and program all your automatic setups for seating position and anti-theft controls for each driver.
There's a HUD (Head Up Display) like in modern fighter aircraft. It projects various information on the windshield in front of the driver so you can see vital information without even taking your eyes off the road. It usually displays the RPM and speed, but can display all sorts of other things, such as oil pressure and temperature, coolant temperature, lateral G-force, and navigation information from the DVD Nav System.
The car comes standard with an "active handling and traction control system", but you can order one of two optional suspension upgrades.
The Z51 package is a race-ready suspension with bigger cross--drilled brake rotors, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, and extra cooling capacity for the power-steering and engine oil. It comes with the same size wheels and tires (HUGE), but the tires are actually Formula-One race car tires.
No matter which suspension and tires you get, there is no spare tire - the tires are "run flat", meaning you can go up to 100 miles at 55mph with zero air pressure in the tire to get you to a repair shop. And, of course, tire pressure can be displayed in your DIC while driving!
Sunny has the "Magnetic Selective Ride Control" suspension, which has special shocks with a magnetically sensitive fluid in them. The computer senses wheel movement 1,000 times per second and adjusts the ride according to your selection in the cockpit of "Tour" or "Sport". Electro-magnets actually change the viscosity of the magnetically charged fluid in the shocks to give you a nice soft ride in the Tour mode, or a nice firm suspension in the Sport mode for hard cornering and solid handling.
The "keyless entry system" means that you never have to reach in your pocket or purse for your car keys, or even your remote unlocking device. As long as you have the key "fob" in your pocket or purse, you just walk up to the car and it recognizes you when you get within about 3 feet. It will deactivate the anti-theft system and unlock the doors so all you do is walk up, open the door, and get in. There's no "door handle" as such on the car - rather there's a touch pad on the back of the door that electronically releases the door latch with a light touch of your fingers.
There's no key for the ignition, either. As long as the fob is in the cockpit (in your pocket or purse), you just push the start button and it starts up and you're ready to drive.
When you shut down the car, get out, and walk away, it senses that the fob has left the area and automatically locks the doors and activates the anti-theft system.
Sunny has the optional DVD Navigation System. This has GPS (Global Positioning System navigation receiver) and all the data for the whole US and Canada on a DVD and a touch-screen display to enter info and control all the navigation features. Before we left Cleveland, we programmed in our address and the system told us exactly how to get to our house. It displays a map of your route and tells you when to turn (both on the map and with voice commands).
But, the fun part of the Corvette is DRIVING it. The LS2 Corvette engine has a displacement of 6.0 liters and develops 400 horsepower. It sounds as good as it looks, and it goes like a rocket!!! With the ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) it stops as good as it accelerates.
Well, that's enough typing for now - I'm going out for a drive!
