REEVES GENEALOGY
The Genealogical
Research of
Robert Paul Reeves

While searching the web for information about my ancestors, I have occasionally stumbled across names of towns and cemeteries and other places that are named REEVES, along with other descriptive words, such as Reevesville, SC. This has led me to add this segment to my page, as it may be yet another resource for REEVES researchers.

REEVESVILLE, SC - Population was 244 in 1990. Located in Dorchester County.

Reeves County, TX - The following additional information was contributed by Felton Reeves of Thomaston, Ga:

Reeves county was named after George R. Reeves. Mr. Reeves was born in the state of Tennessee in 1826. He lived in Arkansas for a while, but after his marriage to Jane Moore in 1844, he moved to Grayson County, Texas where he was a farmer and a rancher. Two years after his arrival in Grayson County, he began to serve the county in different ways. His first job was as tax collector for the county. In 1848 he was elected Sheriff and soon after served as Grayson County's House Representative. He remained in Austin until the War Between the States began. In 1861 he helped organize the 11th Texas Cavalry. His first rank was Captain, but he soon rose to Colonel and was assigned to Wheeler's cavalry. Col. Reeves led his men in such famous battles as the 100-day seige of Atlanta. He also waged guerilla warfare on Sherman's forces as they made their infamous march to the sea. In 1873, Col. Reeves returned home and was sent again to Austin. In 1881 he was elected Speaker of the House, and continued in that role until his death in 1882. Shortly after his death a new county was formed from Pecos County, and was named REEVES COUNTY  in Col. Reeves' honor.
